Driving Tips

Starting the Engine

~4min read

WARNING

  • Always wear appropriate footwear when driving. Wearing unsuitable shoes (high heels, ski boots, etc.) may prevent you from operating the brake pedal, accelerator pedal and clutch pedal (if equipped) properly.
  • Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move and cause an accident.
  • Wait until the engine speed returns to normal idle. The vehicle may move suddenly at high engine speed if you release the brake pedal.

WARNING

Kickdown-Mechanismus (ausstattungsabhängig)

If your vehicle is equipped with a kickdown mechanism in the accelerator pedal, it prevents you from accidentally accelerating at full throttle: the driver must apply more force to depress the pedal. If you depress the accelerator pedal more than 80%, the vehicle accelerates and the pedal becomes easier to press. This is not a malfunction but normal operation.

Starting the Gasoline Engine

1. Vergewissern Sie sich, dass die Feststellbremse betätigt ist.

2. Manual transmission - Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transmission to Neutral. Keep the clutch pedal depressed while turning the ignition key to START. Automatic transmission/Dual clutch transmission - Move the selector lever to P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal. You can also start the engine with the shift lever in Neutral (N).

3. Turn the ignition key to START and hold it until the engine starts (maximum 10 seconds), then release the key. The engine should start without depressing the accelerator pedal.

4. Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle is stationary. Start with moderate engine speed. (Avoid rapid acceleration and rapid deceleration.)

WARNING

Do not attempt to shift the selector lever to Park (P) if the engine stalls while driving. If traffic and road conditions permit, shift the selector lever to N (Neutral) while driving and attempt to restart the engine.

WARNING

  • Do not operate the starter for more than 10 seconds. If the engine stalls or fails to start, wait 5 to 10 seconds before operating the starter again. Improper use of the starter may damage it.
  • Do not turn the ignition key to START while the engine is running. This may damage the starter.

Starting the Diesel Engine

2. Manual transmission - Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transmission to Neutral. Keep the clutch pedal depressed while turning the ignition key to START. Automatic transmission/Dual clutch transmission - Move the selector lever to P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal.

Sie können den Motor auch anlassen, während sich der Schalthebel in der Neutralstellung (N) befindet.

3. Turn the ignition key to the ON position to preheat. The glow plug indicator light will illuminate.

4. When the glow plug indicator light goes off, turn the ignition key to START and hold it until the engine starts (maximum 10 seconds), then release the key.

WARNING

If the engine does not start within 10 seconds after the preheating phase ends, turn the ignition key to LOCK for 10 seconds, then turn it back to ON to preheat again.

Turbocharged Engine with Intercooler - Precautions

1. Do not run the engine at high speed or accelerate hard immediately after starting.

When the engine is cold, let it idle for a few minutes to ensure sufficient lubricant reaches the turbocharger unit.

2. After driving at high speed or after long trips, let the engine idle for approximately 1 minute before turning it off. During this time the turbocharger can cool down before the engine is stopped.

WARNING

Do not stop the engine immediately after heavy engine load. The engine and turbocharger may be seriously damaged.
