Driving Tips

Starting the Engine

~5min read

WARNING

  • Always wear suitable footwear when driving. Unsuitable shoes (high heels, ski boots, etc.) may prevent you from operating the brake and accelerator pedals properly.
  • Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed. The vehicle may move and cause an accident.
  • Wait until the engine speed returns to normal idle. The vehicle may move suddenly at high engine speed if you release the brake pedal.

WARNING

Kickdown-Mechanismus (ausstattungsabhängig)

If your vehicle is equipped with a kickdown mechanism in the accelerator pedal, it prevents you from accidentally accelerating at full throttle by requiring the driver to apply more force to depress the accelerator pedal. When you depress the accelerator pedal more than 80%, the vehicle can be driven at full throttle and the accelerator pedal becomes lighter to depress. This is not a malfunction, but normal operation.

Starting the Gasoline Engine

1. Tragen Sie den Smart-Key bei sich oder lassen Sie ihn im Fahrzeug.

2. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

3. Manual transaxle - Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transaxle into Neutral. Keep the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed when starting the engine. Automatic transaxle/Dual clutch transaxle - Shift the selector lever into P (Park). Firmly depress the brake pedal.

You can also start the engine while the shift lever is in the Neutral (N) position.

4. ENGINE: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The engine should start without pressing the accelerator pedal.

5. Do not let the engine idle warm up while the vehicle is stationary. Drive off at moderate engine speed. (Avoid rapid acceleration and rapid deceleration.)

WARNING

Do not turn the ignition key to the START position if the engine is already running. This may damage the starter motor.

Starting the Diesel Engine

2. Manual transaxle - Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transaxle into Neutral. Depress the clutch pedal and the brake pedal while pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button in the START position. Automatic transaxle/Dual clutch transaxle - Shift the selector lever into P (Park). Firmly depress the brake pedal.

You can also start the engine while the shift lever is in the Neutral (N) position.

3. ENGINE: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button while depressing the brake pedal.

4. Keep depressing the brake pedal until the glow plug indicator goes off (about 5 seconds).

5. The engine has started and the glow plug indicator goes off.

WARNING

If you press the ENGINE START/STOP button once and the engine is preheated, the engine will start.

Starting the Turbocharged Engine with Intercooler and Precautions

1. Do not run the engine at high speed or accelerate hard immediately after starting. If the engine is cold, let it idle for a few minutes to ensure sufficient lubrication of the turbocharger unit.

2. After driving at high speed or after long trips, let the engine idle for approximately 1 minute before turning it off. During this time the turbocharger can cool down before the engine is stopped.

WARNING

Do not stop the engine immediately after heavy engine load. The engine and turbocharger may be seriously damaged.

  • Even if the Smart Key is inside the vehicle, the engine may not start if the Smart Key is too far away from you.
  • If the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the ACC position and a door is opened, the system checks whether the Smart Key is inside the vehicle. If the Smart Key is not in the vehicle, the indicator flashes "" or" The message "Key not in vehicle" appears on the LCD display. When all doors are closed, the warning signal sounds for 5 seconds. The indicator or warning light goes off when the vehicle is in motion. Always make sure you have the Smart Key with you.

WARNING

Der Motor springt nur an, wenn sich der Smart-Key im Fahrzeug befindet.

Never allow children or persons unfamiliar with the operation of your vehicle to touch the ENGINE START/STOP button or similar parts.

WARNING

Do not try to shift the selector lever into Park (P) if the engine stalls while driving. If traffic and road conditions allow, you can shift the selector lever to Neutral (N) while driving and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to try to restart the engine.

WARNING

  • If the battery is weak or if the Smart Key function is not working properly, you can start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button with the Smart Key.
  • If the brake switch fuse is blown, you cannot start the engine in the normal way. Replace the fuse with a new one. If this is not possible, press the ENGINE START/STOP button for 10 seconds in the ACC position. The engine can start without depressing the brake pedal. However, for your safety, always depress the brake pedal before starting the engine.

WARNING

Do not press the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 10 seconds, except when the brake light fuse is blown.
