Applying the parking brake To apply the parking brake, first depress the brake pedal, then, without pressing the release button, pull the parking brake lever up as far as it will go.

Also, when parking on a slope, it is advisable to engage a suitable low gear on vehicles with a manual transmission, or position P (Park) on vehicles with an automatic transmission.

WARNING

  • Driving with the parking brake applied causes excessive wear of the brake pads (or friction material) and discs.
  • Do not apply the parking brake while the vehicle is moving, unless it is an emergency. The vehicle could be damaged and safety would no longer be ensured.

Releasing the parking brake To release the parking brake, depress the brake pedal, then pull the parking brake lever up slightly.

Then, press the release button (1) and lower the parking brake lever (2) while holding the button down.

If the parking brake does not release or releases only partially, have the system checked by an authorised Kia dealer.

WARNING

  • To prevent unintended movement when leaving the vehicle parked, do not use the gear lever in place of the parking brake to hold the vehicle. Apply the parking brake AND make sure the gear lever is firmly engaged in 1st (First) or R (Reverse) if the vehicle has a manual transmission, or in P (Park) if the vehicle has an automatic transmission.
  • Never allow children or persons inexperienced in operating the vehicle to touch the parking brake.

Accidental release of the parking brake may cause serious injury.

• On all vehicles, always fully apply the parking brake when parking to prevent accidental movement, which could cause injury to occupants or pedestrians.

Check the brake warning light by turning the ignition switch to ON (do not start the engine). When the parking brake is applied and the ignition switch is in START or ON, this warning light comes on.

Before driving off, make sure the parking brake is fully released and the brake warning light is off.

If the brake warning light remains on after releasing the parking brake with the engine running, there may be a fault in the braking system.

Pay immediate attention.

If possible, stop the vehicle immediately. If it is not possible to stop the vehicle, drive with the utmost caution and continue until you reach a safe place or a workshop.
