Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) (if equipped)

~3min read

This system further contributes to vehicle stability and steering response when driving on slippery roads, or when the vehicle detects a difference in friction coefficient between the right and left wheels during braking.

VSM System Operation When the VSM system is operating, the ESC indicator light () flashes.

When the Vehicle Stability Management system is operating properly, you may feel slight pulsations inside the vehicle.

This is caused solely by the effect of the brake control and does not indicate a malfunction.

The VSM system does not operate in the following cases:

  • Driving on sloped roads
  • Driving in reverse
  • The ESC OFF indicator light () remains on the instrument cluster
  • The ESC indicator light remains on the instrument cluster

VSM System Deactivated If the ESC OFF button is pressed to turn off the ESC system, the VSM system is also deactivated and the ESC OFF indicator light () comes on.

To reactivate the VSM system, press the button again. The ESC OFF indicator light goes off.

Malfunction Indicator The VSM system may be deactivated even if the ESC OFF button is not pressed. This indicates that a malfunction has been detected in the electric power steering or the VSM system.

If the ESC indicator light () or the EPS warning light remains on, have the vehicle checked as soon as possible by an authorized Kia dealer.

NOTE

  • The VSM system is designed to activate in curves at a speed of approximately 15 km/h.
  • The VSM system is designed to activate when the vehicle brakes on roads with uneven grip at a speed of approximately 30 km/h. A road with uneven grip consists of surfaces with different friction forces.

WARNING

  • The Vehicle Stability Management system does not replace careful driving; it is only an additional function. It is the driver's responsibility to always control speed and the distance from the vehicle ahead.
Always hold the steering wheel firmly while driving.
  • Vehicle functions are designed to be activated at the driver's command, even with the VSM system installed. Always observe normal driving precautions, adjusting speed to weather and/or road conditions.
  • Driving with tires of a different type or size may affect the proper operation of the VSM system. When replacing tires, make sure the sizes are the same as the original tires.
  • ESS: Emergency Stop Signal (if equipped) The Emergency Stop Signal system warns the driver by flashing the brake lights when the vehicle stops suddenly or when the ABS activates during braking. (The system activates when vehicle speed is above 55 km/h and deceleration exceeds 7 m/s², or when the ABS activates due to emergency braking.) When vehicle speed is below 40 km/h and the ABS is deactivated or the sudden braking situation has ended, the brake lights turn off.

WARNING The emergency stop signal system does not operate if the hazard warning lights are on.
