Traction Control System (TCS)

~1min read

The Traction Control System (TCS) prevents wheel spin and improves safety by adjusting engine torque. When the system detects wheel spin on a driven wheel, it reduces engine torque to prevent loss of traction.

This means that the engine, through automatic adjustment, delivers optimum torque to the driven wheels, preventing wheel spin and loss of traction.

The warning light comes on if a malfunction occurs in the system.

See the section "Warning and Indicator Lights" on page 4-41.

WARNING

The Traction Control System (TCS) alone does not guarantee safe driving: the TCS will not ensure safety when driving recklessly, at excessive speed, too close to the vehicle ahead, or when hydroplaning (reduced tire grip caused by a layer of water between the tire and the road surface). There is a risk of a road accident.

Use winter tires or snow chains and reduce speed when roads are covered with ice and/or snow. Driving without traction control devices on roads covered with ice and/or snow endangers safety.

The Traction Control System (TCS) does not guarantee traction, and despite having it you may still be involved in an accident.

CAUTION

To switch off the TCS, press the DSC OFF switch (page 4-90).

TCS/DSC Warning Light

This warning light comes on for a few seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position. If the TCS/DSC is active, the warning light flashes.

If the light stays on, the TCS, DSC or Brake Assist system may be faulty and may not work properly. Contact a qualified workshop. We recommend an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

CAUTION

  • In addition to the flashing warning light, you will hear a faint operating sound of the system coming from the engine compartment. This indicates that the TCS/DSC is working properly.

  • On slippery surfaces, such as

fresh snow, it will not be possible to reach high engine speeds while the TCS is on.
