Driver's front airbag

~2min read

Essential equipment

diagnostic tool

The driver's front airbag is fitted with a two-stage inflator bag (low and high output).

It inflates depending on the severity of the impact or the position of the driver's seat adjustment.

To deploy, the airbag bag tears through the steering wheel cover.

REMOVAL

  • Disconnect the battery.
IMPORTANT
  • Before removing any component of the safety system, the airbag control unit MUST be locked using the diagnostic tool.

When this function is active, all firing circuits are inhibited and the airbag warning light on the dashboard comes on (ignition on).

  • Never handle pyrotechnic systems (pretensioner or airbag) near a heat source or flame, as there is a risk of accidental deployment.
WARNING

The airbag control unit MUST be locked before starting removal. Locking the airbag control unit also unlocks the electric steering column lock.

  • Release the connector locks at (3) using a small screwdriver.
  • Disconnect the connectors:
  • driver's front airbag,
  • cruise control switches.
  • Release:
  • the airbag,
  • the connector retaining clip, using a small flat-blade screwdriver.
IMPORTANT
  • The airbag is fitted with a connector that short-circuits when disconnected, to prevent any accidental deployment.
  • For disposal of an undeployed pyrotechnic retractor, (see Airbags and Pretensioners chapter, Airbag Control Unit, page 88C-9).

INSTALLATION

WARNING
  • After an airbag has deployed, certain parts must be replaced without fail (see Airbags and Pretensioners chapter, Airbag and Pretensioner Control Unit, page 88C-6).
  • If the steering wheel is removed, replace the steering wheel mounting bolt.
  • Fit both connectors.
  • Position the airbag on the steering wheel.
  • Slide the airbag downwards to clip it in place.
IMPORTANT

Check the airbag ECU using the diagnostic tool.

  • Unlock the airbag ECU if everything is correct, otherwise refer to the diagnostic manual.
  • Refit in the reverse order of removal.
