Curtain airbag

The curtain airbag is fixed behind the headlining trim.

On deployment, the inflatable bag unclips the headlining trim.

REMOVAL

Before removing any component of the safety system, lock the airbag control unit using the diagnostic tool. When this function is active, all firing circuits are inhibited and the airbag warning light on the dashboard comes on (ignition on).

• Remove the headlining trim (see Headlining trim).

EXAMPLE OF REMOVAL FOR THE RIGHT-HAND CURTAIN AIRBAG

• Disconnect connector (1) from the module.
• Remove the module mounting screws (2).

• The curtain section (3) is clipped to the body.

• Unclip the curtain by:

• lowering (4) the curtain, to bring down the clip fixed to the body,
• pulling (5) the curtain so as to release the clip from its upper part,
• lifting (6) the assembly.

INSTALLATION

• When a curtain airbag module has deployed, the deformation of the first fixing point always requires fitting a plate supplied as a spare part.
• When a curtain airbag has deployed, certain parts must be replaced (Airbag and pretensioners chapter, Airbag and pretensioner control unit, page 88C-6).

• Use the following spare parts:

• one curtain airbag,
• one plate, reference 82 00 277 635,
• two specific rivets, reference 77 03 072 050,
• one sample of adhesive, reference 77 11 171 805.

Note: The plate is identical for the right and left sides.

I - FITTING THE PLATE

• Cut out the sheet metal (7) damaged by the curtain airbag deployment.
• Apply anti-corrosion paint to the cut area.
• Clean the surfaces to be bonded.
• Degrease the surfaces to be bonded.

• Apply adhesive to the plate after applying the supplied activator.
• Position the plate.
• Rivet the plate.

The adhesive and rivets are specific and must in no case be replaced with other references.

• Inject hollow-section wax (see MR365 - bodywork).

II - INSTALLING THE MODULE

• Install the airbag without tightening the fixing screws.

• Install the airbag, starting with the retainer (8).
• Position all the clips.
• Tighten the side curtain airbag fixing screws to torque (0.8 daN.m).
• Reconnect the connector, making sure it is fully locked.

Check the airbag ECU using the diagnostic tool.

• Unlock the airbag ECU if everything is correct, otherwise refer to the diagnostic manual.
