Antifreeze

~2min read

* Do not allow antifreeze to contact skin or painted body surfaces.

If antifreeze gets on the skin or in the eyes, immediately flush with plenty of cold water. Antifreeze is very poisonous, which makes it dangerous if swallowed. Do not leave antifreeze in an open container or spilled on the floor in puddles. Children and animals may drink or lick antifreeze, attracted by its sweet smell. For disposal of used antifreeze, consult the competent authorities. Many communities have collection points where this fluid can be disposed of safely. Do not pour antifreeze onto the ground or into the sewer.
The coolant filled into the system consists of a mixture of water and ethylene glycol and must provide a freezing point not higher than –25° C, depending on the local climate. The mixture must also have anti-corrosion properties and a higher boiling point.
Flush and replace the coolant in the cooling system at intervals of not more than 60000 km, or once every 2 years (see subsection 2.8.4). Changing the coolant less often than once every 2 years leads to cooling system malfunction and the formation of rust and scale. If local water contains a lot of mineral salts (is hard), mix the antifreeze with distilled water.
Before filling with antifreeze, check all connections for leaks, since antifreeze has increased fluidity and can seep even through microscopic holes. Topping up antifreeze is generally not required. Therefore, if the coolant level in the cooling system keeps dropping, find and eliminate the cause.
The exact mixture depends on local climatic conditions. The mixture must contain at least 50% antifreeze and no more than 70% water. Before adding antifreeze, determine the required concentration using the chart on the antifreeze container. The ratio of water to antifreeze can be measured with a commercially available hydrometer. Use antifreeze that meets the vehicle manufacturer's requirements.

A low-cost hydrometer can be used to determine the antifreeze mixture ratio in the vehicle.
