Removal

PROCEDURE
1. It is advisable to remove the fuel tank after it has been completely emptied. Some vehicles have a drain plug in the tank. If there is no drain plug, empty the tank by driving the vehicle and then running the engine at idle, or drain the gasoline through a hose with a rubber hand pump (commercially available). Do NOT siphon gasoline by mouth!
2. Remove the fuel filler cap to release residual pressure.
3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
4. If the tank contains fuel, drain the gasoline into a container designed for gasoline.
5. Raise the vehicle and support it on stands.
6. Before removing the tank, study its design, layout, and mounting on the vehicle (see figure Fuel Tank and Related Parts).
7. Remove the center muffler section and heat shield from the vehicle (see subsection 5.13).
8. Place a floor jack under the tank, with a board between the jack platform and the tank to avoid damaging the tank.
9. Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines and the filler neck hose.

* After disconnecting, plug the hoses and lines to prevent dirt from entering.

11. Remove the bolts of the fuel tank retaining straps.
12. Lower the tank far enough to disconnect the wiring harness connector and the ground strap from the fuel pump and fuel level sensor (if the wires and strap are not already disconnected).
13. Remove the tank.

Installation

Install the fuel tank in the reverse order.

Fuel Tank Cleaning and Repair

Any repair of the fuel tank or fuel filler neck must be performed by qualified personnel experienced in carrying out these hazardous and critical operations. Even after the tank has been cleaned and flushed, gasoline vapors may remain inside and can cause an explosion during repair work.

If the fuel tank has been removed from the vehicle, do not place it where sparks or an open flame may ignite fuel vapors escaping from the tank.
Exercise particular caution in garages equipped with natural gas emergency lighting.
