GENERAL INFORMATION
The fuel system consists of:
– fuel tank;
– electric fuel pump (mounted inside the fuel tank);
– main injection system relay and fuel pump relay;
– fuel injectors;
– fuel pressure regulator;
– air filter;
– throttle body.
All vehicles covered in this manual are equipped with an electronically controlled direct fuel injection system (MPFI system).
Multi-Point Fuel Injection (MPFI) System
The fuel injection system supplies fuel sequentially to the engine cylinders under control of impulses synchronized with the opening of the intake valves. Injection is controlled by the electronic control unit (ECM). The ECM monitors various engine parameters and provides precise metering of the fuel injected in strict sequence into the cylinder intake ports. The throttle valve is intended only to regulate the amount of air supplied to the cylinders. Since the cylinder injectors are installed in close proximity to the intake valves, more precise control of the air-fuel ratio in the mixture is achieved.
Fuel Pump and Fuel Feed Line
Fuel is drawn from the tank, supplied to the injection system, and returned to the tank through two metal lines routed under the vehicle floor. The electric fuel pump is mounted together with the fuel level sensor inside the tank. Fuel vapor and heated fuel are returned to the tank through a separate line.
The fuel pump is activated when the starter cranks the engine or immediately after the engine starts. During cranking and engine operation, reference pulses from the electronic ignition unit are sent to the control unit (see sub-section 3.3.8). The fuel pump switches off 2–3 seconds after the reference pulses stop.
Exhaust System
The exhaust system consists of the exhaust manifold equipped with an oxygen sensor, the catalytic converter, the exhaust pipes, and the muffler.
The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust emission control system and is installed in the exhaust pipe to reduce toxic emissions into the atmosphere.
The catalytic converter consists of a single-stage converter combined with a three-way reduction catalyst. For a more detailed description of the catalytic converter, refer to subsection 1.5.51.
