PROCEDURE
The auxiliary fuel pump is installed in the fuel tank and attached to the fuel level sensor. To remove the pump, remove the fuel level sensor from the tank (see paras. 1–5 of subsection 3.1.7), then remove the pump from it. Before removing the pump, perform the following: PROCEDURE 1. Check the electrical wires for breaks. Remove the luggage compartment floor mat and the floor access cover to reach the fuel level sensor. Disconnect the connector from the sensor and check whether there is a jumper between the center and side brown wire terminals. 2. Check the pump fuse in the fuse and relay box: No. 5 for Golf vehicles built until 07.1989 and Jetta until 12.1988; No. 18 for Golf vehicles built from 08.1989 and Jetta from 01.1989. 3. Check the fuel pump relay (for relay number, see subsection 12.1). To do this, disconnect the connector from the Hall sensor on the ignition distributor. Remove the fuel pump relay from the relay and fuse box. Using a voltmeter, check the voltage between terminal No. 2 and ground, No. 2 and 1, No. 4 and 1, and No. 5 and 1 of the relay and fuse box (see figure Relay and Fuse Box on models built from 08.1989). In each case, the voltmeter should show battery voltage. 4. Connect the center terminal of the fuel level sensor connector to ground for a few seconds. If the voltage does not drop, check the ignition control unit. If the voltage drops, replace the fuel pump relay. If the voltage drops after replacing the relay, check the Hall sensor of the ignition distributor.Test yourself
