Multi-Point Injection

For more precise distribution of the air/fuel mixture, an injection system in which each cylinder has its own fuel injector is better suited than one in which fuel is injected by only a single central injector. Therefore, the 85 kW engine is equipped with multi-point (sequential) fuel injection. This is an electronically controlled system with programmed injection characteristics, a controlled ignition system, knock-controlled ignition timing, integrated idle speed stabilization, and fuel cut-off during overrun.

If the name of this injection system reminds you of the word "Elefant" (elephant), you are not far from the truth. Volkswagen and Audi electronics engineers took the name from "weiber Elefant" (white elephant), a term computer specialists use for all-round experts. The new word formation is Digitaler Elefant.
