Seat Belt Pretensioner

~1min read

The front outboard seat belt system is equipped with pretensioners designed to remove slack from the seat belt in a crash. These devices can improve seat belt performance by removing slack from the seat belt at the beginning of a crash. The pretensioners operate for occupants of all sizes, including those in child restraints.

NOTE:

These devices do not replace proper seat belt use by the occupant. The seat belt must still be worn snugly and positioned correctly.

The pretensioners are activated by the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC). Like the airbags, the pretensioners are single-use items. A deployed pretensioner or a deployed airbag must be replaced immediately.

Load Limiting Function

The front outboard seat belt system is equipped with a load limiting function. This can help further reduce the risk of injury in a crash. The seat belt system has a retractor designed to release the webbing in a controlled manner.
