Supplemental Side Airbags
Seat-Mounted Side Airbags (SAB)
This vehicle is equipped with seat-mounted side airbags (SAB).
Seat-mounted side airbags (SAB) are located on the outboard side of the front seats. SABs are labeled "SRS AIRBAG" or "AIRBAG" on the label or on the seat trim on the outboard side of the seatbacks.
SABs can help reduce the risk of occupant injury in certain side impacts, in addition to the injury reduction potential provided by seat belts and the vehicle body structure.

When the SAB deploys, it opens the seam on the outboard side of the seatback trim cover. The inflating SAB deploys through the seat seam into the space between the occupant and the door. The SAB moves at very high speed and with enough force to injure occupants who are not seated properly, or if objects are located in the SAB inflation zone. Children are at even greater risk of injury from a deploying airbag.
Supplemental Side Air Bag (Curtain) (SABIC)
This vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Side Air Bags (Curtain) (SABIC).
The supplemental side air bags (curtain) (SABIC) are located above the side windows. The trim covering the SABIC is marked "SRS AIRBAG" or "AIRBAG".

SABIC may help reduce the risk of head and other injuries to the front and rear side seat occupants in certain side impacts, in addition to the injury reduction potential provided by the seat belts and vehicle structure.
SABIC inflates downward, covering the side windows. The inflating SABIC pushes the outer edge of the headliner out of the way and covers the window. SABIC can inflate with enough force to injure occupants if they are not wearing seat belts or are not seated properly, or if objects are located in the SABIC inflation area. Children are at even greater risk of injury from an inflating air bag.
SABIC may help reduce the risk of partial or complete ejection of occupants through the side windows in certain side impacts.
- Do not install equipment, stack luggage, or other cargo high enough to block SABIC deployment. The trim area above the side windows where SABIC is located and its deployment path must remain free of any obstructions.
- For SABIC to function properly, do not install any accessories or items to your vehicle that may alter the roof. Do not add an aftermarket sunroof to your vehicle. Do not add roof racks that require permanent attachment (bolts or screws) to the roof of the vehicle. Do not drill into the roof of the vehicle for any reason.
Side Impacts
Side air bags deploy in certain side impacts. The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) determines whether side air bag deployment is appropriate for a specific impact event, based on the severity and type of collision. Side impact sensors help the ORC determine the proper response to impact events. The system is calibrated to deploy the side air bags on the side of the vehicle that is struck during impacts requiring occupant protection from the side air bags. In side impacts, the side air bags deploy independently; a left side impact deploys only the left side air bags, and a right side impact deploys only the right side air bags. Vehicle damage alone is not a good indicator of whether the Side Air Bag system should have deployed.
Side air bags will not deploy in all side collisions, including some collisions at certain angles or some side collisions that do not affect the passenger compartment. Side air bags may deploy in an angled or offset frontal collision where the front air bags deploy.
Side air bags are a supplement to the seat belt system. Side air bags deploy in less time than it takes to blink an eye.
- Occupants, including children, who lean against or are very close to the side air bags may be seriously injured or killed. Occupants, including children, should never lean against or sleep on the door, side windows, or other locations where the side air bags deploy, even if they are in a child restraint or booster seat.
- Seat belts (and child restraints when required) are necessary for your protection in all collisions. They also help keep you in position, away from a deploying side air bag. For best protection from the side air bags, occupants must wear seat belts properly and sit upright with their back against the seatback. Children must be properly secured in a child restraint or booster seat appropriate for their size.
- Side air bags need room to deploy. Do not lean against the door or window. Sit upright in the center of the seat.
- Being too close to the side air bags during deployment can result in serious injury or death.
- Relying only on side air bags can result in more serious injury in a collision. Side air bags work with your seat belt to properly restrain you. In some collisions, side air bags will not deploy at all. Always wear your seat belt, even if you have side air bags.
NOTE:
The air bag covers may be hard to see in the interior trim, but they will open when the air bag deploys.
Rollover Events
Side air bags and seat belt pretensioners deploy in certain rollover events. The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) determines whether deployment is appropriate for a specific rollover event, based on the severity and type of event. Vehicle damage alone is not a good indicator of whether
The side air bags and seat belt pretensioners should have deployed.
Side airbags and seat belt pretensioners do not deploy in every rollover event. The Rollover Detection System determines whether a rollover may occur and whether deployment is appropriate. In the event of a rollover or near-rollover event, and if deployment is appropriate, the Rollover Detection System will also deploy the side airbags and seat belt pretensioners on both sides of the vehicle.
SABIC may help reduce the risk of partial or complete ejection of occupants through the side windows in some rollover or side impact events.
