Airbag Warning Light
The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) monitors the readiness of the electronic airbag system components whenever the ignition switch is in the START or ON/RUN position. If the ignition switch is in the OFF or ACC position, the airbag system is not active and the airbags will not deploy.
The ORC contains a backup power supply that can deploy the airbag system even if the battery is discharged or disconnected before deployment.
The ORC turns on the airbag warning lamp on the instrument panel for approximately four to eight seconds as a self-check when the ignition switch is first turned to the ON/RUN position. After the self-check, the airbag warning lamp turns off. If the ORC detects a malfunction in any part of the system, it turns on the airbag warning lamp either momentarily or continuously. A single chime will sound to alert you if the lamp illuminates again after initial startup.
The ORC also includes diagnostics that will illuminate the airbag warning lamp on the instrument panel when a malfunction is detected that may affect the airbag system. The diagnostics also record the nature of the malfunction. While the airbag system does not require maintenance, immediately take your vehicle to an authorized dealer to have the airbag system serviced if any of the following occur.
- The airbag warning lamp does not illuminate for four to eight seconds when the ignition switch is first turned to the ON/RUN position.
- The airbag warning lamp remains on after the four to eight second interval.
- The airbag warning lamp flashes intermittently or remains on while driving.
NOTE:
If the speedometer, tachometer, or any engine-related gauges do not operate, the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) may also be disabled. In this condition, the airbags may not be ready to deploy for your protection. Immediately have the airbag system serviced by an authorized dealer.
