Starter Solenoid Removal and Installation
PROCEDURE
4-cylinder models with manual transmission use a starter motor manufactured by Nippondenso with a non-replaceable solenoid. If the solenoid fails, the entire assembly must be replaced. The procedure below applies to Mitsuba starter motors used on V6 models.
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
If the vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft audio system, make sure you have the correct code to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. Remove the starter motor (see Starter Motor Removal and Installation).
3. Disconnect the large wire connecting the solenoid to the starter motor terminal.

4. Remove the long bolts securing the end cover to the gear housing. Remove the armature assembly housing.

5. Remove the mounting screws and separate the gear housing from the front cover assembly.

6. Remove the mounting screws from the gear housing and remove the solenoid.

7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Before assembly, apply assembly grease to the shift lever and the solenoid plunger.
