Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) (if equipped)

~2min read

This system supports vehicle stability and steering operations while driving on slippery roads or when the vehicle recognizes a different friction coefficient between the left and right wheels during braking.

VSM Operation

If the Electronic Stability Control system is active, the ESC indicator flashes ( ).

If the Electronic Stability Control system is working properly, you will feel a slight pulsation in the vehicle. This is the effect of brake control and does not indicate a problem.

VSM will not operate if:

  • you are on a sloped road, e.g. downhill or uphill.
  • you are driving in reverse
  • ESC OFF () illuminates in the instrument cluster.
  • The EPS warning light illuminates in the instrument cluster.

VSM operation is disabled

If you press the ESC OFF button to turn off the Electronic Stability Control, the VSM function is also disabled and the ESC OFF indicator ( ).

To turn the VSM function back on, press the button again. The ESC OFF indicator turns off.

warning light

VSM may be disabled even if you have not turned VSM off with the ESC OFF button. This means that a malfunction has been detected in the EPS (Electric Power Steering) or the VSM system. When the ESC indicator () or the EPS warning light remains on, have the system checked at a specialized workshop as soon as possible. Kia recommends visiting a Kia dealer or service partner.

NOTICE

  • VSM operates normally at speeds above 15 km/h in curves.
  • VSM operates normally at speeds above 30 km/h when you drive the vehicle on roads with sand or mud. Such roads have a surface with varying friction forces.

WARNING

  • The Vehicle Stability Management system does not replace safe driving, but is a useful function. The driver must always monitor the speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead. Hold the steering wheel firmly while driving.
  • Your vehicle responds accordingly to the driver's intentions, even if VSM is installed. Always observe the normal precautions for driving. Always adjust your speed to the environmental conditions, e.g. in bad weather or on slippery roads.
  • Using different tires or a different tire size may cause a malfunction of the VSM system. Have the wheel replaced with a new tire of the same size as the original tire.
