Brake system with brake booster
Your vehicle's brake system is equipped with a brake booster, and it is adjusted automatically during normal use.
When the brake booster assistance is not available, for example when the engine is off or in other situations, you can still use the brakes, but you must depress the brake pedal more forcefully. However, the braking distance will be longer.
When the engine is off, the stored brake assistance is used each time you depress the brake pedal. Therefore, do not pump the brake pedal several times, as this will cancel the brake booster assistance.
Only pump the brake pedal several times in succession if necessary to keep the vehicle under control on slippery road surfaces.
WARNING
Brakes
- Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving. This will cause the brakes to overheat and wear excessively, and the braking distance will increase.
- When descending a long or steep road, shift to a lower gear and avoid constant braking. Constant braking causes the brakes to overheat, which may result in temporary loss of braking performance.
- When the brakes are wet, the vehicle may not brake as usual or may pull to one side. A light test stop will show whether the brake system is wet. Always test the brakes after driving through deep water. To dry the brake pads, lightly apply the brake pedal while driving under safe conditions until normal braking performance is restored.
- Always check the function of the brake and accelerator pedals before you drive off. If the position of the accelerator and brake pedals is not checked before driving off, you may press the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. This may cause a serious accident.
In Case of Brake Failure
If the foot brake fails during travel, you can use the parking brake for emergency braking. However, the braking distance in this case will be considerably longer than with normal foot braking.
WARNING
Parking brake
If the parking brake is applied during driving (at normal driving speed), it may cause a sudden loss of vehicle control. If you use the parking brake, stop the vehicle and be especially careful.
Disc brake pad wear indicator
Your vehicle is equipped with disc brakes.
If the brake pads are worn down and need to be replaced, listen for a high-pitched squeal from the front or rear wheels. The noise may occur intermittently or whenever you apply the brake pedal.
Note that certain driving conditions or climates may cause the brakes to squeak when you apply the brakes for the first time (or use them lightly). This is normal and does not indicate a brake problem.
DANGER
- To avoid expensive repairs, do not drive with worn brake pads.
- Always replace front or rear brake pads in pairs.
WARNING
brake wear
This warning indicates that your vehicle must be serviced. If you ignore this sound, braking efficiency may decrease, which may cause a serious accident.
Rear drum brakes (depending on equipment)
Your rear drum brakes do not have wear indicators. Therefore, check the rear brake pads by listening for squealing from the rear brakes. Also check the rear brakes each time you rotate or replace the tires, and replace the front brakes as needed.
