Electronic Power Steering (if equipped)

~2min read

The power steering uses a motor to reduce the effort required at the steering wheel. If the engine is off, or if the power steering is not functioning efficiently, the steering still works, but more effort is required at the steering wheel.

The electric power steering motor is controlled by a dedicated control unit that drives the motor according to the effort applied to the steering wheel, the steering wheel position and the vehicle speed.

For greater steering precision, the force needed to turn the steering wheel increases in proportion to speed.

If you notice stiff steering during normal driving, contact an Authorized Kia Dealer.

NOTE During normal use of the vehicle, the following symptoms may be observed:

  • The EPS warning light does not come on.
  • The effort required to turn the steering wheel increases immediately after switching on the ignition. This is due to a diagnostic cycle of the EPS system. Once the diagnosis is complete, the effort required to turn the steering wheel returns to normal.
  • When the ignition is switched on, or when the ignition key is turned to the "LOCK" position, a click may be heard from the EPS relay.
  • When the vehicle is stationary or driving at low speed, the noise generated by the motor may be heard.
  • If the electric power steering does not operate normally, the related warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The steering wheel may not function properly. Have the vehicle checked as soon as possible by an authorized Kia dealer.
  • The effort required to steer increases if the steering wheel is turned continuously while the vehicle is stationary.

However, after a few minutes the condition returns to normal.

  • When using the steering wheel in low temperature conditions, abnormal noise may occur. As the temperature rises, the noise disappears.
  • This is normal.
