Pre-driving checks

~3min read

Before entering the vehicle

  • Check that all windows, outside mirrors and exterior lights are clean.
  • Check the tires.
  • Make sure there are no signs under the vehicle that could indicate a leak in any of the systems.
  • If you are going to reverse the vehicle, make sure there are no obstacles behind it that could prevent this.

Necessary checks

Fluid levels such as engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid and windshield washer fluid should be checked regularly, although the exact intervals between checks differ for each fluid.

Further details on this are provided in Section 7, "Maintenance and Service."

CAUTION Driving while distracted may cause loss of vehicle control, which may lead to an accident, serious personal injury, or even death. The driver's primary responsibility is to operate the vehicle safely and in compliance with the law. Using any portable devices, other equipment, or vehicle systems that may divert the driver's attention, eyes, and focus from safe vehicle operation, or that are not permitted by law, is not allowed while driving.

Checks before starting the engine

  • Close and lock all doors.
  • Adjust the seat so that all controls are easily accessible.
  • Adjust the interior and exterior rearview mirrors.
  • Make sure all lights are working properly.
  • Check all indicators.
  • After turning the ignition switch to the ON position, check that the hazard warning lights work.
  • Release the parking brake and make sure the brake warning light goes off.

To operate the vehicle safely, become familiar with the vehicle and its equipment.

WARNING While the vehicle is in motion, all passengers must wear their seat belts properly fastened. For more details on the correct use of seat belts, see "Seat Belts" in Section 3. WARNING Before moving the vehicle forward in D (Drive) or backward in R (Reverse), always first check the area around the vehicle to make sure no people, especially children, are nearby. WARNING - Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs Driving after drinking alcohol is dangerous. Driving under the influence of alcohol is the main cause of fatal accidents on the roads every year. Even a small amount of alcohol affects the driver's reflexes, perception and judgment of the situation. Driving after taking drugs is just as dangerous as, if not more dangerous than, driving while drunk. Drinking alcohol or taking drugs significantly increases the risk of being involved in a serious accident.

Do not drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Do not get into a vehicle driven by a driver who has been drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Choose a sober person to drive or call a taxi.

WARNING
  • When you intend to park or stop the vehicle with the engine running, be careful not to keep the accelerator pedal pressed for a long time.

This may cause the engine or exhaust system to overheat and then lead to a fire.

  • When the driver brakes suddenly or turns the steering wheel sharply, loose objects could fall onto the floor, interfere with pedal operation and possibly cause an accident.

All objects should be stored securely in the vehicle.

  • If you do not concentrate solely on driving, an accident may occur. Be careful when operating anything that could distract you from driving, such as the audio system or the heater. It is always the driver's duty to drive safely.
