Fuel-efficient driving

~4min read

A vehicle's low fuel consumption depends largely on the driver's driving style, where the vehicle is driven, and when.

Each of these factors affects how many miles (kilometers) you can drive on one gallon (liter) of fuel. To operate the vehicle as economically as possible, follow these suggestions to save money on fuel and repairs:

  • Drive smoothly. Accelerate only moderately. Do not move forward in "jerks" or shift gears with the throttle fully open; instead, try to maintain a steady driving speed. Do not drive too fast between traffic lights.

Try to match your speed to the speed of other drivers so you do not shift gears unnecessarily.

Whenever possible, avoid driving in heavy traffic. To avoid unnecessary braking, always keep a safe distance from other vehicles. This will reduce brake wear.

  • Drive at a moderate speed. The faster the vehicle is driven, the more fuel it consumes. Driving at a moderate speed, especially on the highway, is one of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.
  • Do not drive with your foot resting on the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumption and cause these components to wear faster. In addition, driving with your foot on the brake pedal can overheat the brakes, reducing their effectiveness and potentially leading to more serious consequences.
  • Take care of your tires. Keep tires inflated to the recommended pressure.
  • Incorrect tire pressure, either too high or too low, causes unnecessary tire wear.

Tire pressure should be checked at least once a month.

  • Make sure the wheels have correct alignment. Incorrect wheel alignment can result from hitting a curb or driving too fast over rough road surfaces. Incorrect wheel alignment causes faster tire wear and may cause other problems. It may also increase fuel consumption.
  • Keep the vehicle in good condition. To achieve lower fuel consumption and reduce maintenance costs, maintain the vehicle according to the maintenance schedule in Section 7. If the vehicle is used under severe conditions, more frequent maintenance is required (for details, see Section 7).
  • Keep the vehicle clean. To make the vehicle last as long as possible, keep it clean and free of corrosive substances.
  • It is especially important not to let mud, dirt, or ice accumulate on the underbody. This additional load can increase fuel consumption and contribute to corrosion.

  • Do not carry excess luggage.
  • Do not carry unnecessary cargo in the vehicle. Extra weight has a negative effect on fuel consumption.

  • Do not leave the engine idling longer than necessary. If the driver is waiting in the vehicle (not in traffic), they should turn off the engine and restart it only when ready to drive away.
  • Note that the vehicle does not require a long warm-up. After starting the engine and before engaging a gear, let the engine run for 10 to 20 seconds.
  • However, in very low ambient temperatures, allow the engine to warm up for a somewhat longer time.

  • Do not "lug" or "over-rev" the engine.
  • Lugging means driving at too low a speed in too high a gear, which causes uneven engine operation. If this happens, shift to a lower gear.

Over-revving means increasing engine speed so much that the safe limit is exceeded. This can be avoided by moving the gear selector to the recommended gear.

  • Use the air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is driven by the engine, so fuel consumption increases when it is in use.
  • Leaving the windows open when driving at high speed may increase fuel consumption (worsen economy).
  • Fuel economy deteriorates when driving into a headwind or crosswinds.
  • To partially compensate for the resulting losses, reduce your speed when driving in similar conditions.

Keeping the vehicle in good technical condition is important for both economy and safety. Therefore, scheduled inspections and maintenance should be performed by an authorized Kia Motors dealer.

WARNING - Turning off the engine while the vehicle is moving Never turn off the engine when the vehicle is coasting downhill or while it is moving. Without the engine running, power steering and brake assist will not work properly. Instead, downshift to a gear that provides adequate engine braking. In addition, turning off the ignition while driving may engage the steering lock, which may cause loss of vehicle control and result in serious injury or death.
