Driving with a trailer

~3min read

If you plan to tow a trailer behind your vehicle, first check the applicable regulations with the transport authority.

Various regulations apply to towing trailers, cars or other types of vehicles or equipment. For more information, consult an authorized Kia Motors dealer before towing.

WARNING - Towing a Trailer If improper equipment is used and the vehicle is driven improperly, you may lose control of the vehicle while towing a trailer. For example, if the trailer is too heavy, the brakes may perform poorly or not work at all. This may result in serious injury or death to the driver and passengers.

A trailer should be towed only after all steps listed in this section have been completed.

WARNING - Weight Limits Before towing, make sure that the gross trailer weight, gross combined vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross axle weight rating and trailer tongue load are all within the specified limits.

NOTE - For Europe

  • The technically permissible maximum rear axle load may be exceeded by no more than 15%, and the technically permissible maximum laden vehicle weight may be exceeded by no more than 10% or 100 kg (220.4 lbs), whichever is lower. In this case, do not exceed a speed of 100 km/h (62.1 mph) for M1 category vehicles or 80 km/h (49.7 mph) for N1 category vehicles.
  • When an M1 category vehicle tows a trailer, the additional load applied to the trailer hitch may exceed the maximum rated load capacity of the tires by no more than 15%. In this case, do not exceed a speed of 100 km/h (62.1 mph) and increase the tire pressure by at least 0.2 bar.
CAUTION Improper trailer towing may damage the vehicle and result in costly repairs not covered by the warranty. To tow a trailer properly, follow the recommendations in this section.

This vehicle can tow a trailer. To find out the towing capacity of another vehicle of a specified weight, read the information in the "Trailer Weight" section below.

Keep in mind that driving with a trailer is different from driving the vehicle alone.

Towing a trailer changes vehicle handling, durability and fuel consumption. Successful and safe trailer towing requires the right equipment, used correctly.

This section contains proven, important tips on towing a trailer as well as safety rules.

Many of them are important for the safety of the driver and passengers. Before towing a trailer, read this section carefully.

Components responsible for pulling a load, such as the engine, transmission, wheel assemblies and tires, must work harder due to the increased weight. The engine must run at relatively higher speeds and under greater load. The additional load generates more heat. A trailer also increases air resistance, which increases the required towing force.

NOTE - Trailer Mounting Location The towing bracket mounting holes are located on both sides of the underbody, behind the rear tires.
