Stopping the engine

~1min read

WARNING

Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving: Stopping the engine while the vehicle is moving, for any reason other than an emergency, is dangerous.

Stopping the engine while driving significantly reduces braking effectiveness due to loss of brake booster assistance, which may cause an accident and serious injury.

1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

2. (Manual transmission) Place the shift lever in neutral and apply the parking brake.

(Automatic transmission) Place the shift lever in P and apply the parking brake.

3. Press the START/STOP button to stop the engine. The ignition switch position is OFF.

CAUTION

When leaving the vehicle, make sure the Start button is in the OFF position.

CAUTION

  • The engine compartment fan may run for several minutes after the ignition switch is turned from ON to OFF, regardless of whether the A/C is on or off, in order to quickly cool the engine compartment.

  • If the key indicator lamp (green) flashes for about 30 seconds after the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or OFF, the key battery is low.

Replace the battery before the key stops working.

See "Replacing the Key Battery" on page 6-42.

(Automatic transmission) If the engine is off and the shift lever is set to a position other than P, the ignition switch changes to the ACC position.

Emergency Engine Stop

Pressing and holding the Start button while the engine is running or while the vehicle is stopped, or pressing it rapidly several times, will immediately stop the engine. The ignition switch changes to the ACC position.
