i-stop Function
The i-stop function automatically stops the engine while the vehicle is stopped at an intersection or in traffic, and then automatically restarts it so you can continue driving. This system reduces fuel consumption, lowers exhaust emissions, and eliminates engine idling noise while the vehicle is stationary.
Stopping and Restarting the Engine with the i-stop Function
CAUTION
The i-stop indicator lamp (green) illuminates under the following conditions:
After the engine has been stopped by the i-stop function.
(Models other than European) The conditions for the i-stop function to stop the engine are met while the vehicle continues to be driven.

The i-stop indicator lamp (green) turns off when the engine restarts.
Manual Transmission
1. Stop the vehicle by depressing the brake pedal, then the accelerator pedal.
2. While depressing the clutch pedal, move the shift lever to neutral. The i-stop function stops the engine when the clutch pedal is released.
3. The engine restarts automatically when the clutch pedal is depressed.
Automatic Transmission
1. The i-stop function stops the engine when the brake pedal is depressed while driving (not applicable when the shift lever is in R or M, fixed second gear mode) and the vehicle has stopped.
2. The engine restarts automatically when the brake pedal is released if the shift lever is in D or M (not in fixed second gear mode).
3. When the shift lever is in N or P, the engine does not restart when the brake pedal is released. The engine restarts if the brake pedal is depressed again or the shift lever is moved to D, M (not in fixed second gear mode) or R. (For safety, always keep the brake pedal depressed when operating the shift lever while the i-stop function has stopped the engine.)
System Operating Conditions
When the System Operates
The engine stops and the i-stop indicator lamp (green) illuminates under the following conditions.
(SKYACTIV-G 1.3, SKYACTIV-G 1.5) The engine is warmed up.
(SKYACTIV-D 1.5)
- The engine is not cold.
- Fuel injection quantity adjustment, which is performed periodically and automatically, is not being performed.
The engine has been started and the vehicle has been driven for a period of time.
The engine was started with the engine hood closed.
The battery is in good condition.
All doors, the trunk lid and the engine hood are closed.
The driver's seat belt is fastened.
The air conditioning system is not operating with the airflow mode set to (A/C ON).
(Automatic air conditioning)
- The air conditioning temperature dial is set to a position other than maximum cooling (A/C ON).
- The interior temperature and the temperature set on the air conditioning system are nearly the same.
The i-stop warning lamp (amber) is not illuminated or flashing.
The advanced keyless entry and Start button functions are operating normally.
The vacuum level in the brake system is sufficiently high.
The steering wheel is not being moved.
(Manual transmission)
- The vehicle speed is 3 km/h or less.
- The shift lever is in neutral.
- The clutch pedal is not depressed.
(Automatic transmission)
- The vehicle is stopped.
- The shift lever is in D or M (not in fixed second gear mode).
- The automatic transmission fluid is sufficiently warm.
- The automatic transmission fluid temperature is not abnormally high.
- The steering wheel is almost straight (if force is applied to the steering wheel even though the wheels are almost straight, the i-stop function may not operate. Do not apply force to the steering wheel for the i-stop function to operate).
- The vehicle was stopped by depressing the brake pedal.
- No sudden emergency braking has occurred.
When the System Does Not Operate
The i-stop function does not stop the engine under the following conditions:
The vehicle is stopped but the engine continues to idle.
The air conditioning system is operating with the airflow mode set to (A/C ON).
(Automatic air conditioning)
- The air conditioning temperature dial is set to maximum cooling (A/C ON).
- There is a large difference between the cabin temperature and the temperature set on the air conditioning system.
The outside temperature is extremely low or high.
The atmospheric pressure is low (when driving at high altitude above sea level).
(Automatic transmission)
- The vehicle is parked on a steep slope.
- When the vehicle is stopped, the steering wheel is not fully straightened.
(SKYACTIV-D 1.5) The diesel particulate filter (DPF) system is removing particulate matter (PM).
CAUTION
Under the following conditions, a certain amount of time must pass before the i-stop function stops the engine:
For some reason, the vehicle battery is discharged, e.g. the vehicle has not been driven for a long time.
The ambient temperature is low or high.
For some reason, the battery terminals have been disconnected, e.g. after replacing the battery with a new one.
(SKYACTIV-D 1.5) After particulate matter has been removed by the DPF system.
The engine does not restart.
For safety reasons, the engine will not restart if the following operations are performed while the engine is stopped by the i-stop function.
In such situations, start the engine using the normal method.
The engine hood is open.
(European model) The driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is open.
(Non-European models)
(Manual transmission) When the shift lever is in any position other than neutral, the driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is open.
(Automatic transmission) When the shift lever is in D or M (not in fixed second gear mode), the driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is open.
The time the engine has been stopped is short, or the time until the next engine stop is long.
The ambient temperature is low or high.
The battery charge level is significantly reduced.
The vehicle's electrical components draw a large amount of current.
The engine restarts automatically when it has been stopped by the i-stop function. The engine restarts automatically under the following conditions.
The i-stop function switch is pressed until a signal is emitted.
The air conditioning system operates with the airflow mode set to (A/C ON).
(Automatic air conditioning)
The air conditioning temperature control dial is set to the maximum cooling position (A/C ON).
The cabin temperature differs significantly from the air conditioning set temperature.
Releasing the service brake while parked on a slope will cause the vehicle to move slightly.
Two minutes have passed since the engine was stopped by the i-stop function.
The battery charge level is significantly reduced.
(Automatic transmission)
The accelerator pedal is depressed and the shift lever is in D or M (not in fixed second gear mode).
The shift lever is moved to the R position.
The shift lever is moved from N or P to D or M (not in fixed second gear mode).
The steering wheel is moved while the shift lever is in D or M (not in fixed second gear mode).
The shift lever is set to M and fixed second gear mode is selected.
(Non-European models)
(Manual transmission) When the shift lever is in neutral, the driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is opened.
(Automatic transmission) When the shift lever is in N or P, the driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is opened.
Shift lever is moved while the engine is stopped by the i-stop function (automatic transmission). If the shift lever is moved from D or M (not in fixed second gear mode) to N or P while the engine has been stopped by the i-stop function, the engine will not restart even if the brake pedal is released.
The engine restarts if the brake pedal is depressed again or the shift lever is moved to D, M (not in fixed second gear mode) or R. (For safety, always keep the brake pedal depressed when operating the shift lever while the engine has been stopped by the i-stop function.)
(European model)
If the shift lever is moved from D or M (not in fixed second gear mode) to N or P, and the driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is opened, the engine will not restart.
Start the engine using the normal method.
(Non-European models)
If the shift lever is moved from D or M (not in fixed second gear mode) to N or P, and the driver's seat belt is unfastened and the driver's door is opened, the engine will restart.
The battery terminals have been disconnected.
The engine may not be stopped correctly by the i-stop function if the battery terminals have been disconnected. In addition, after replacing the battery, the operation of the i-stop function should be checked. Consult a specialist service workshop; we recommend a Mazda Authorized Service Center.
