Three-way catalytic converter

~1min read

The exhaust system of your vehicle contains an emission control device called a three-way catalytic converter. To help reduce harmful emissions, exhaust gases are burned at very high temperatures in the three-way catalytic converter.

WARNING

  • Exhaust gases and the exhaust system are very hot. Keep people, animals and flammable materials away from exhaust system components.
  • Do not park or stop your vehicle on a surface covered with flammable materials such as dry grass, old paper or rags. These materials could ignite and cause a fire.

WARNING

  • Do not use leaded gasoline. Deposits from leaded gasoline seriously reduce the ability of the three-way catalytic converter to reduce polluting emissions.
  • Have your engine tuned up regularly. Faults in the ignition, fuel injection or electrical circuits can allow fuel that is too rich to enter the three-way catalytic converter and overheat it.

Do not continue to drive your vehicle if the engine misfires or if you notice a significant loss of performance or other operating problems.

Visit a NISSAN dealer as soon as possible to have your vehicle inspected.

  • Avoid driving the vehicle when the fuel level is very low. Running out of fuel can cause engine misfires and damage the three-way catalytic converter.
  • Do not run the engine at high speed while it is warming up.
  • Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle.
  • Test yourself
