Malfunction indicator
A malfunction indicator that stays on or flashes while the engine is running may indicate a malfunction in the emission control system.
This same indicator may also stay on if the fuel cap is loose or missing, or if the fuel tank of your vehicle is nearly empty.
Make sure the fuel cap on your vehicle has been properly retightened and that the tank contains at least 11.4 liters (3 US gallons) of fuel.
The warning light
should turn off after
a few driving cycles if there is no other malfunction in the emission control system.
If this indicator stays on for 20 seconds, then flashes for 10 seconds while the engine is not running, the vehicle is not ready for an emission inspection and maintenance check. Refer to the "Preparation for inspection and maintenance" section in the "Technical data and consumer information" chapter of this manual.
Operation
The malfunction indicator comes on when one of the following occurs:
- The malfunction indicator stays on continuously - A malfunction in the emission control system has been detected. Check the fuel cap if the FUEL CAP LOOSE warning appears on the multi-function display.
If the fuel cap is loose or missing, tighten or install it and continue driving. The indicator
should turn off after
a few driving cycles. If the indicator
stays on, visit a NISSAN dealer to have your vehicle inspected. It is not necessary to have your vehicle towed to the dealer. - The malfunction indicator light is flashing. A misfire has been detected that could damage the emission control system of your vehicle. To prevent damage to the emission control system or reduce the severity of damage:
- do not drive faster than 72 km/h;
- avoid sudden acceleration and deceleration;
- avoid steep uphill grades;
- reduce the load carried or towed by your vehicle as much as possible.
The malfunction indicator light may stop flashing and remain on. Visit a NISSAN dealer to have your vehicle inspected. It is not necessary to have your vehicle towed to the dealer.
WARNING
Continuing to drive the vehicle without having the emission control system inspected or repaired (if necessary) may affect vehicle handling, increase fuel consumption, and increase the risk of damage to the emission control system.
