  2. Lower return spring (foot)
  3. Lateral retainer
  4. Handbrake lever return spring

REMOVAL

Linings must be replaced as a complete axle set; never fit linings of different makes or grades.

Remove:

  • the brake drum (see relevant section),
  • the lower spring (2) using brake shoe pliers.

Using multi-grip pliers, remove the shoe lateral retaining springs.

Move each shoe foot alternately over the fixed point. Push the shoe feet towards each other to spread the ends at the wheel cylinder.

Pull the assembly (RAI and shoes) away from the backplate, then remove it after unclipping the handbrake cable.

INSTALLATION

Position the assembly on the vehicle.

Hook the handbrake cable onto the lever.

Push the shoe feet together and position the ends on the wheel cylinder pistons. Take care not to damage the boots.

Position the shoes on the fixed point (C).

Fit the lateral retainers (3).

Remove the clamps from the wheel cylinder pistons, then refit the lower spring (2).

ADJUSTMENT

Using a screwdriver, adjust the shoe diameter by the toothed segment.

Refit the drums without tightening the nuts.

Adjust the linings by repeatedly applying the brake pedal (about 20 times).

Make sure the RAI is working correctly (characteristic 'click' audible at the drums).

Remove the drums.

Make sure:

  • the cables slide freely,
  • the handbrake levers (L) bear correctly on the shoes.
Garnitures de frein (tambour)

Gradually tension the cables at the central adjuster so that the levers (L) lift off between the 1st and 2nd notch of the control lever travel and remain lifted at the 2nd notch.

Lock the locknut of the central adjuster.

Refit:

  • the drums and tighten the nuts to a torque of 17.5 daN.m,
  • the plugs.
