Crankshaft Oil Seals
PROCEDURE
The front crankshaft oil seal is installed in the oil pump housing (on MN and 2G engines, in the oil pump drive cover). The rear oil seal is installed in the retainer.
Cylinder Block and Sump 1 – rear crankshaft oil seal; 2 – oil seal retainer bolt; 3 – rear oil seal retainer; 4 – retainer gasket; 5 – sump drain plug; 6 – drain plug gasket; 7 – main bearing cap bolt; 8 – main bearing cap; 9 – sump mounting bolt; 10 – oil sump; 11 – sump gasket; 12 – cylinder block; 13 – clutch housing cover plate
Front Oil Seal Replacement PROCEDURE 1. Remove the camshaft drive belt and crankshaft sprocket (see
subsection 2.2.1.7) 2. Remove the oil pump (on MN and 2G engines, remove the oil pump drive cover) (see subsection 2.2.1.11).
3. Remove the old seal from the oil pump housing (on MN and 2G engines, from the oil pump drive cover). 4. Press in the new seal after lubricating it with engine oil. 5. Install the oil pump (oil pump drive cover) in place. 6. Install the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft drive belt. Rear Oil Seal Replacement PROCEDURE 1. Remove the flywheel (see subsection 2.2.1.8). 2. Unscrew bolts 2 (see figure Cylinder Block and Sump) and remove retainer 3 with gasket 4. 3. Remove seal 1 from retainer 3. 4. Press the new seal into the retainer after lubricating it with engine oil. 5. Install retainer 3 with new gasket 4. 6. Tighten bolts 2 evenly in a diagonal sequence. 7. Install the flywheel. Oil Seal Replacement (engine installed on vehicle) PROCEDURE Front seal 1. Remove the alternator drive belt, crankshaft pulley, camshaft drive covers, camshaft drive belt, and crankshaft sprocket. 2. Remove the front crankshaft oil seal with a special puller. 3. Lubricate the new seal with engine oil. 4. Press in the new seal using a tool consisting of a tube pressed against the outer diameter of the seal. At the opposite end of the tube there is a thick washer through which a bolt passes. The bolt is screwed into the crankshaft and, through the washer and tube, evenly presses the seal into place. Rear seal 5. Remove the transmission, clutch, and engine flywheel. 6. Remove the old seal with a puller or screwdriver. 7. Lubricate the new seal with engine oil. 8. Press in the new seal using a tool consisting of a flat washer of the same diameter as the seal. The center of the washer has a hole for the crankshaft journal on which the flywheel is installed, and two diametrically opposed holes into which bolts are inserted. The bolts screw into the flywheel mounting holes in the crankshaft flange. Evenly tightening the bolts presses the seal into place.
