Hydraulic Valve Lifter Condition Check

~1min read

PROCEDURE

Hydraulic lifters are non-disassemblable and are not subject to repair. Checking Hydraulic Valve Lifter Condition (engines MH and 2G). PROCEDURE 1. Start and warm up the engine. Run it until the cooling fan comes on. 2. Maintain engine speed at approximately 2500 rpm for 2 minutes. If noise is heard from the valve train, identify the faulty lifter.

3. To identify the faulty lifter, remove the cylinder head cover and turn the crankshaft clockwise so that the camshaft cam of the lifter being checked points up. 4. Depress the lifter with a wooden or plastic wedge and measure the free play of the lifter with a dial indicator. Free play before the valve opens must not exceed 0.1 mm. If free play is greater, replace the lifter.

Warning: After installing a new hydraulic lifter that has been pre-filled with oil and bled, do not start the engine for at least 30 minutes to avoid piston contact with the valves. Valve train noise on engine start is normal, since part of the oil drains into the sump when the engine is not running. The noise disappears after the lifters are filled with oil.
