Observing Shift Operation

~1min read

During a test drive, pay attention to the shift operation:

Upshift: with the accelerator pedal not fully depressed, the shift is almost unnoticeable; with the accelerator pedal fully depressed (when pulling away or while driving), upshifts become more noticeable, but the upshift must engage smoothly. A brief increase in engine speed during a shift indicates faults that should be investigated more closely.

Downshift: with the accelerator pedal released (coasting) and at very low speeds, it is practically imperceptible. A jerk during a downshift at partial or full throttle is quite normal. A downshift using the selector lever with the accelerator pedal released takes 1–2 s. If the accelerator pedal is depressed at the same time as the selector lever is moved, the shift must occur without delay.

Note: The Audi 80 with automatic transmission must not be towed further than 50 km, otherwise the automatic transmission will lack lubrication. For the same reason, the maximum towing speed of 50 km/h must not be exceeded. In doubtful cases, it is better to choose a shorter route or call a tow truck.
