Removal and Installation of Manual Transmission

Removing the manual transmission. At the rear, the transmission is supported by only one crossmember (arrow), which must be removed completely.
Front-wheel drive models
Raise and secure the vehicle so that you can work both in the engine compartment and under the underbody. The transmission is removed downward.
PROCEDURE
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
Remove the three upper bolts connecting the engine and transmission.
Unscrew the ground wire connecting the transmission to the body.
Disconnect the speed sensor connector on the transmission by pressing the connector locks. Repeat the same for the reverse light switch connector.
Loosen the wiring straps and disconnect the electrical connector from the lambda sensor.
Remove the lower engine compartment panel (see Body Components chapter).
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the manifold, and disconnect the catalytic converter from the center (main) muffler. Remove the corresponding section of the muffler.
Remove the rear crossmember.
Remove the transmission shift rod.
Disconnect the procon-ten cables from the transmission.
Remove the drive axle protective plate.
Remove the drive axles from the right and left sides of the transmission by turning the joints to the left (while holding the shaft ends), and tie up both drive axles.
Remove the clutch hydraulic slave cylinder; the hose may remain connected.
Support the upper end of the steering pitman arm.
Secure the engine with supports to prevent it from tipping forward or backward.
Place a floor jack under the transmission from below.
Remove the transmission and the front engine mount.
Remove the lower bolts connecting the engine and transmission.
Carefully separate the transmission from the engine using a pry bar.
Now carefully lower the transmission using the floor jack.
For installation, clean the splined input shaft of the transmission and lubricate it with MoS2 paste or V.A.G. G 000 100 grease.
Check that the centering sleeves for the transmission have engaged in the engine block.
Check and, if necessary, adjust the shift mechanism with the transmission installed.
6-cylinder engine models: angle the upper left side of the transmission case at 30°, otherwise contact with the exhaust pipe may occur.
For tightening torques, see the table.
Tightening Torques
| Tightening Torque | N·m |
| Transmission to engine | |
| M 8 M 10 M 12 |
25 45 65 |
| Drive axle to flange shaft | |
| M 8 | 45 |
