Transmission Noise

~1min read

Over time, noise from the gearbox may develop. If this occurs, first check the gearbox oil level.

If a whining noise occurs when engaging gears, and its pitch changes as the accelerator is pressed or released, the cause may be wear in the gear mesh of the corresponding gear pair.

If noise occurs in all gears, the cause is the final drive or the gearbox shaft bearings.

A grinding noise that occurs only after the gearbox has reached operating temperature indicates runout of the synchronizer blocking rings. As soon as the oil becomes more fluid, it is thrown off the synchronizer ring always at the same location.

Note: Workshops rarely undertake repair or overhaul of a gearbox and usually recommend replacing a faulty unit with a new one. Financially, however, installing a used unit obtained from a dismantler is in most cases more economical. Pay attention to the correct letter code of the gearbox. It is stamped on the top of the gearbox. In addition, the day, month and year of manufacture are indicated there, with the year shown only by its last digit.
