Removing the Automatic Transmission

~2min read

The vehicle must be raised and reliably secured. You will also need a large workshop jack to support and lower the very heavy automatic transmission.

PROCEDURE

Disconnect the battery.

Disconnect the connector from the tachometer sensor.

On models with a 6-cylinder engine, remove the intake duct. To do this, disconnect the vacuum hoses, remove the air duct hose and unscrew the mounting bolts.

On models with a split ATF filler tube, loosen it at the top and pull it out. Plug the lower part of the tube with lint-free rag.

Unscrew the bolts connecting the engine and automatic transmission that are accessible from above.

Lift the cooling system hoses.

Place secure supports under the engine to prevent it from tipping over.

Unbolt the lower engine compartment panel.

Remove the heat shield of the drive axle.

Remove the body crossmembers below the exhaust pipe or catalytic converters (depending on engine type).

Remove the exhaust pipes (on 6-cylinder engine models, together with the catalytic converters).

Disconnect the drive shafts from the transmission (do not let them drop).

Remove the starter. This provides access to the torque converter mounting bolts.

Place a container under the bolted connections of the ATF lines.

Disconnect the ATF cooler line at the level of the oil pan.

Unbolt the ATF line brackets and move the hoses aside.

Loosen a total of three torque converter bolts from the engine side.

To do this, hold the center bolt of the pulley or damper (depending on engine type) with a box wrench. Rotate the crankshaft by 1/3 of a turn each time.

Unbolt the heat shield of the multifunction switch.

Disconnect the connector on the automatic transmission housing. Then remove the procon-ten cable holders from their clips and push the cables upward.

Unbolt the front engine bracket.

Raise the automatic transmission with a floor jack and loosen the automatic transmission mounting bolts.

Tilt the engine together with the automatic transmission slightly backward. Then place a secure support under the engine again.

Unbolt the hex bolt of the rear automatic transmission bracket rubber-metal mount.

Remove the lower connecting bolts securing the automatic transmission to the engine.

Separate the automatic transmission from the engine. Use a pry bar if necessary.

Carefully lower the automatic transmission.

When removing the automatic transmission, hold the torque converter in place.

The torque converter must stay with the automatic transmission! Make sure it does not fall out (secure it with wire).
