Removing the Outer Joint

~1min read

All models

Внешний шарнир приводного вала:
Outer drive shaft joint: 1 – retaining ring;
2 – spacer washer;
3 – disc spring.

PROCEDURE

Remove the drive shaft.

If the boot is undamaged, bend back the large clamp and slide the protective boot back.

If the boot is damaged, remove it completely.

Strike the joint firmly from the inside with an aluminum or plastic hammer to drive the joint off the shaft.

Before installing the new joint, insert a new retaining ring into the groove of the drive shaft.

Install the disc spring and spacer washer, if they were fitted to the respective drive shaft version, as shown in the illustration. Do not forget the rubber boots.

When installing, press the joint onto the shaft with a plastic hammer until the retaining ring engages.

Grease the joint: the new joint with an outer diameter of 81 or 88 mm requires 90 g of MoS2 lithium grease (VW G 6), of which 40 g goes into the joint and 50 g into the boot.

Joints with an outer diameter of 98 mm require more grease: 120 g of MoS2 grease (VW G 6), with 80 g in the joint and 40 g in the boot.

If used joints are being installed, only add grease to them.

Tighten the boot clamps securely.
