Active Protection

~2min read

The emergency braking function in the BMW 5 Series G30 is designed for situations with a high probability of collision. As soon as a critical approach to a vehicle ahead is detected, the system automatically prepares the braking system. If the driver does not react in time, it initiates autonomous emergency braking. The function is an important life-saver, especially in city traffic or when traffic suddenly comes to a standstill. It helps the driver avoid serious rear-end collisions and works reliably over a wide speed range. Despite technical assistance, the driver's full attention remains essential at all times.

Principle

Active Protection prepares occupants and the vehicle for a possible impending accident in critical driving or collision situations.

General

Active Protection consists of various PreCrash functions, which may vary depending on equipment.

The system can detect certain critical driving situations that could lead to an accident. These include the following critical driving situations:

  • Emergency braking.
  • Strong understeer.
  • Strong oversteer.

Within system limits, certain functions of some systems can trigger Active Protection:

  • Forward collision warning with brake function: automatic brake intervention.
  • Forward collision warning with brake function or Night Vision with person and animal detection: brake force assistance.
  • Rear collision prevention: detection of impending rear-end collisions.

Safety information

WARNING The system does not relieve you of your own responsibility. Due to system limits, critical situations may not be detected reliably or in time.

There is a risk of accident. Adapt your driving to the traffic conditions. Observe the traffic situation and intervene actively in the relevant situations.

Function

Once the seat belt is fastened, the driver's and front passenger's belt webbing is automatically tensioned once after driving off.

In accident-critical situations, the following individual functions are activated as needed:

  • Automatic pretensioning of the front seat belts.
  • Automatic closing of the windows to a gap.
  • Automatic closing of the glass roof, including the sunblind.
  • With front comfort seats: automatic positioning of the front passenger seat backrest.

After a critical driving situation without an accident, the front seat belts are released again.

If the belt tension does not release automatically, stop and open the seat belt using the red button on the buckle. Close the seat belt again before continuing to drive.

All other systems can be returned to the desired setting.

Active Protection in the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 is an innovative system that protects occupants and the vehicle in detected accident-critical situations. Preventive measures such as automatically closing the windows and tensioning the seat belts minimize the consequences of a possible accident. Closing the glass roof is also one of the protective functions.

The system works unobtrusively in the background and activates automatically when needed, without distracting the driver. After a critical situation has been overcome, the measures are reversed as far as possible to restore comfort.

In this way, the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 helps raise the level of safety to a new standard, an important part of the holistic safety concept.
