Active pedestrian protection
Active pedestrian protection on the BMW 5 Series G30 is an innovative safety system that automatically raises the hood in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. This creates a deformation zone that reduces the impact of the head. Sensors in the bumper detect the collision. The system is triggered at speeds between 30 and 55 km/h. Safety notes warn against working on the hinges and components, as improper handling can lead to unintended triggering. In rare cases, the system may also trigger in a collision with animals or objects. After deployment, the hood must not be opened, to avoid further damage. Repairs may only be carried out by a specialist partner, for maximum safety and system integrity.
Principle
With active pedestrian protection, the hood is raised in a collision between the front of the vehicle and a pedestrian. Sensors under the bumper are used for detection.
General
Once deployed, pedestrian protection provides deformation space under the hood for the subsequent head impact.
Safety notes
WARNING Contact with individual components of the hinges and hood latches can cause the system to trigger unintentionally. There is a risk of injury or damage to property. Do not touch individual components of the hinges and hood latches.
WARNING Modifications to pedestrian protection can cause failure, malfunction or unintended triggering of pedestrian protection. There is a risk of injury or death. Do not make any modifications to pedestrian protection, its individual components or the wiring.
Do not disassemble the system.
WARNING Improperly performed work can cause failure, malfunction or unintended triggering of the system. In the event of a malfunction, the system may not deploy as intended in an accident of corresponding severity.
There is a risk of injury or death.
Have the system tested, repaired, or disassembled and scrapped by a manufacturer's service partner, another qualified service partner, or a specialist workshop.
System limitations
Active pedestrian protection is only triggered at speeds between approx. 30 km/h and 55 km/h.
For safety reasons, the system may in rare cases also trigger when a pedestrian impact cannot be clearly ruled out, for example in the following situations:
- When striking objects, e.g. a waste bin or a bollard.
- In a collision with animals.
- In case of stone impact.
- When driving into a snowdrift.
Pedestrian protection deployed
WARNING After deployment or damage, the function of the system is restricted or no longer available. There is a risk of injury or death.
After deployment or in case of damage, have the system checked and replaced by a manufacturer's service partner, another qualified service partner, or a specialist workshop. NOTICE Opening the hood when pedestrian protection has deployed can cause damage to the hood or to pedestrian protection. There is a risk of property damage. Do not open the hood after the Check Control message appears. Have it checked by a manufacturer's service partner, another qualified service partner, or a specialist workshop.
Malfunction
A Check Control message is displayed.
The system has deployed or is malfunctioning.
Drive immediately at reduced speed to a manufacturer's service partner, another qualified service partner, or a specialist workshop to have the system checked and repaired.
Active pedestrian protection on the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 is an innovative system that focuses on protecting road users outside the vehicle. In the event of a collision, the hood is raised slightly to create additional deformation space and reduce the risk of injury to the pedestrian.
Thanks to sensitive sensors under the bumper, the system reliably detects an impact within a defined speed range. In this way, the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 makes an important contribution to pedestrian protection in urban traffic and meets the highest safety standards.
FAQQuestion 1: Can the system also trigger in a collision with objects such as posts?
Answer: Yes, in rare cases the system can also trigger in collisions with fixed objects if a pedestrian impact cannot be clearly ruled out.
Question 2: Does the function remain active after activation?
Answer: After activation, the system is inoperative and must be inspected and repaired by a qualified workshop.
