Right-of-Way Warning

The Cross Traffic and Oncoming Traffic Warning in the BMW 5 Series (VII generation) is designed to prevent accidents at intersections and in situations with limited visibility of oncoming traffic. Using sensors and cameras, the system detects crossing vehicles or objects and issues visual and audible warnings when there is a risk of collision. It intervenes early, especially when pulling out carelessly or when visibility is restricted by parked vehicles. The function is part of Driving Assistant Professional and improves reaction capability in complex traffic situations. Principle

The system warns in situations where right of way must be yielded according to the road signs, for example in the following traffic situations:

• At an intersection.
• At a junction.
• At a slip road.
• At a roundabout.

General

The system uses a camera to evaluate traffic signs.

The navigation system transmits road layout information to the system.

The system warns in the speed range from 15 km/h to 65 km/h in two stages:

• Pre-warning: visual warning symbol in the instrument cluster.
• Acute warning: visual warning symbol in the instrument cluster and warning tone.

The timing of the warnings varies depending on the current driving situation and the selected warning timing.

The following traffic signs are taken into account for the Right-of-Way Warning: Yield signs: a pre-warning is issued for these signs.

Stop signs: a pre-warning and an acute warning are issued for these signs.

Camera

The camera is located in the area of the interior rearview mirror.

Keep the windshield in the area in front of the interior rearview mirror clean and free of obstructions.

Switching on/off

Switch on automatically

The Right-of-Way Warning activates automatically after starting the vehicle if the function was switched on when the vehicle was last turned off.

Switch on/off manually

Press the button.

The menu for the Intelligent Safety systems is displayed.

If all Intelligent Safety systems were switched off, all systems are now switched on.

"Configure INDIVIDUAL": Depending on equipment, the Intelligent Safety systems can be configured individually. The individual settings are activated and stored for the currently used driver profile.

As soon as a setting is changed in the menu, all settings in the menu are activated.

Press the button repeatedly.

Switch between the following settings:

"ALL ON": All Intelligent Safety systems are switched on. Basic settings are activated for the sub-functions.

"INDIVIDUAL": The Intelligent Safety systems are switched on according to the individual settings.

Some Intelligent Safety systems cannot be switched off individually.

Press and hold the button.

All Intelligent Safety systems are switched off.

Warning Function

Pre-warning

If there is a risk of disregarding right of way, a yield sign or a stop sign is shown in the instrument cluster.

With an advance warning, brake or steer to avoid.

Acute warning

If there is a risk of disregarding right of way, a stop sign is shown in the instrument cluster and a tone sounds.

With an acute warning, brake or steer to avoid immediately.

Display in head-up display

Depending on equipment, the warning is displayed simultaneously in the Head-Up Display and in the instrument cluster.

System limitations

Safety information

WARNING Due to system limitations, the system may respond incorrectly or not at all. There is a risk of accident or property damage. Observe the notes on system limitations and intervene actively if necessary.

No warning

The system does not warn, for example, in the following situations:

• In right-of-way situations without yield signs or stop signs.
• At intersections with active traffic light systems, e.g. traffic lights.

Functional limitation

The function may be restricted, for example, in the following situations:

• When signage is unclear.
• When traffic signs are fully or partially covered or dirty.
• When traffic signs are poorly visible or twisted.
• When traffic signs are too small or too large.
• In heavy fog, rain, sleet or snowfall.
• On steep crests or dips.
• On tight bends.
• If the camera's field of view or the windshield in the area in front of the interior mirror is dirty or obstructed.
• Up to 10 seconds after engine start via the Start/Stop button.
• During the camera calibration process immediately after vehicle delivery.
• With persistent glare from backlight, e.g. low sun.

Dynamic Brake Lights

Principle

Following road users are alerted to an emergency braking maneuver by the brake lights flashing. This can reduce the risk of a rear-end collision.

General

• Normal braking: brake lights illuminate.
• Hard braking: brake lights flash.

Shortly before coming to a standstill, the hazard warning lights switch on.

To switch off the hazard warning lights:

• Accelerate.
• Press the hazard warning light button.
