Operation

Side Collision Warning

~4min read

The Rear Cross Traffic Alert in the BMW 5 Series VII generation is a valuable safety feature, especially when reversing out of a parking space. Using radar sensors, it detects vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians approaching from the side and issues an early warning. A visual display on the Control Display and an audible signal help the driver react in good time. This function is particularly useful in narrow parking garages, at exits or at unclear intersections. Combined with the rear view camera, it provides enhanced all-round visibility and actively helps prevent collisions. Indispensable for stress-free maneuvering in any environment.

Principle

The system helps to avoid impending side collisions.

General

Allgemein

Four radar sensors in the bumpers monitor the area beside the vehicle at speeds of approx.

70 km/h to approx. 210 km/h.

A front camera determines the position of the lane markings.

If another vehicle is detected beside your vehicle, for example, with which a side collision is imminent, the system helps the driver avoid a collision by means of a steering intervention.

Safety information

WARNING The system does not relieve you of your own responsibility to correctly assess visibility and traffic conditions.

There is a risk of accident. Adapt your driving to the traffic conditions. Observe the traffic situation and intervene actively in the relevant situations.

Prerequisites for operation

The lane markings must be detected by the camera for the Side Collision Warning with steering intervention to be active.

Switching on/off

Switch on automatically

The Side Collision Warning switches on automatically after starting the vehicle if the function was switched on when the vehicle was last turned off.

Switch on/off manually

Press the button.

The menu for the Intelligent Safety systems is displayed.

If all Intelligent Safety systems were switched off, all systems are now switched on.

"Configure INDIVIDUAL": Depending on equipment, the Intelligent Safety systems can be configured individually. The individual settings are activated and stored for the currently used driver profile.

As soon as a setting is changed in the menu, all settings in the menu are activated.

Press the button repeatedly.

Switch between the following settings: "ALL ON": All Intelligent Safety systems are switched on. Basic settings are activated for the sub-functions.

"INDIVIDUAL": The Intelligent Safety systems are switched on according to the individual settings.

Some Intelligent Safety systems cannot be switched off individually.

Press and hold the button.

All Intelligent Safety systems are switched off.

In the event of a collision risk

If there is a risk of collision, the indicator light in the exterior mirror flashes and the steering wheel begins to vibrate.

This is followed by an active steering intervention to avoid the collision and keep the vehicle safely within its own lane. The steering intervention is noticeable at the steering wheel and can be overridden manually at any time.

System limitations

Safety information

WARNING Due to system limitations, the system may respond incorrectly or not at all. There is a risk of accident or property damage. Observe the notes on system limitations and intervene actively if necessary.

Functional restrictions

The function may be limited in the following situations:

  • If the speed of the approaching vehicle is much higher than your own speed.
  • In heavy fog, rain or snowfall.
  • On sharp bends or narrow roads.
  • If the bumpers are dirty, iced over or have stickers attached to them.
  • With protruding cargo.
  • With missing, worn, poorly visible, converging or diverging, or unclear lane markings, such as at construction sites.
  • When lane markings are covered by snow, ice, dirt or water.
  • When lane markings are not white.
  • When lane markings are obscured by objects.
  • When driving closely behind a vehicle ahead.
  • With persistent glare from backlighting, e.g. low sun.
  • If the camera's field of view or the windshield in the area in front of the interior mirror is dirty or obstructed.
  • During the camera calibration process immediately after vehicle delivery.

If the function is restricted, a Check Control message is displayed.

If the trailer socket is occupied, e.g. when towing a trailer or using a bicycle carrier, the system cannot be switched on. A Check Control message is displayed.

The Side Collision Warning in the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 is another intelligent system for increasing driving safety. It uses radar sensors and a front camera to monitor the area beside the vehicle and warn of impending collisions. In a hazard, the steering wheel vibrates, and an active steering intervention helps keep the vehicle in its lane.

The system works unobtrusively in the background and only intervenes when it is really necessary. This supports the driver without being intrusive. The Side Collision Warning is especially effective in heavy traffic or during overtaking maneuvers.

The BMW 5 Series G30/G31 thus offers a comprehensive safety concept that effectively complements active accident avoidance.
