Person warning with City braking function
The person warning with City braking function in the BMW 5 VII Gen detects pedestrians near the roadway and can brake automatically in hazardous situations. Thanks to the front camera, the traffic area is monitored continuously. As soon as a pedestrian is detected, a visual and audible warning is issued. If there is no reaction, the system initiates braking. Ideal in city traffic or where visibility is limited. The function also works in darkness, provided the headlights deliver sufficient light. Despite technical precision, the system does not replace the driver's responsibility; it serves as an intelligent addition in urban environments.
Principle
The system can help prevent accidents involving pedestrians.
At city speeds, the system warns of possible collision risk with pedestrians and supports with a braking function.
General
The system is active at speeds of approx.
10 km/h to approx. 60 km/h.
Persons are taken into account when they are within the detection range of the system.
The system is controlled by the camera in the area of the interior rearview mirror.
Detection range

The detection range in front of the vehicle consists of two parts:
- Central area, arrow 1, directly in front of the vehicle.
- Extended area, arrow 2, to the right and left of the central area.
A collision is imminent if persons are in the central area. Persons in the extended area only trigger a warning if they are moving toward the central area.
Safety notes
WARNING Displays and warnings do not relieve you of your own responsibility. Due to system limits, warnings or system reactions may not be issued, may be late, or may be incorrect. There is a risk of accident. Adapt your driving style to traffic conditions. Observe traffic and actively intervene in the appropriate situations. WARNING Due to system limits, malfunctions of individual functions may occur when towing or being towed with Intelligent Safety systems activated, e.g. Forward Collision Warning with braking intervention.
Risk of accident. Before towing or being towed, switch off all Intelligent Safety systems.

Intelligent Safety
Camera

The camera is located in the area of the interior rearview mirror.
Keep the windshield in the area in front of the interior rearview mirror clean and free of obstructions.
Switching on/off
Switch on automatically
The system is automatically active after every trip start.
Switch on/off manually
Press the button.
The menu for the Intelligent Safety systems is displayed.
If all Intelligent Safety systems were switched off, all systems are now switched on.
"Configure INDIVIDUAL": Depending on equipment, the Intelligent Safety systems can be configured individually. The individual settings are activated and stored for the currently used driver profile.
As soon as a setting is changed in the menu, all settings in the menu are activated.
Press the button repeatedly.
Switch between the following settings: "ALL ON": All Intelligent Safety systems are switched on. Basic settings are activated for the sub-functions.
"INDIVIDUAL": The Intelligent Safety systems are switched on according to the individual settings.
Some Intelligent Safety systems cannot be switched off individually.
Press and hold the button.
All Intelligent Safety systems are switched off.

Warning with braking function
Display
A warning symbol is displayed in the instrument cluster and on the Head-Up Display when a collision with a detected person is imminent.
A red symbol is displayed and a signal sounds.
Alternatively, on vehicles with this equipment, a red warning triangle lights up in the instrument cluster.
Intervene immediately yourself by braking or steering around the obstacle.
Brake Intervention
The warning prompts you to intervene yourself.
During a warning, when the brake pedal is pressed, maximum braking force is applied.
Brake force assistance requires the brake pedal to be pressed quickly and firmly enough.
In addition, if a collision is imminent, the system can support you with a brake intervention.
At low speed, the vehicle can be braked to a standstill.
Manual transmission: During a braking intervention down to a standstill, the engine may stall.
The braking intervention only takes place if driving stability has not been restricted, e.g.
by deactivating Dynamic Stability Control DSC.
The braking intervention can be cancelled by pressing the accelerator pedal or by an active steering movement.
Object detection may be limited. Observe the limits of the detection range and the functional restrictions.
System limitations
Safety information
WARNING Due to system limitations, the system may respond incorrectly or not at all. There is a risk of accident or property damage. Observe the notes on system limitations and intervene actively if necessary.
Detection range
The camera's detection capability is limited.
As a result, warnings may be missing or delayed.
The following may not be detected, for example:
- Partially concealed pedestrians.
- Pedestrians who are not recognized as such due to viewing angle or outline.
- Pedestrians outside the detection range.
- Pedestrians less than 80 cm tall.
Functional restrictions
The function may be restricted, for example, in the following situations:
- In heavy fog, rain, sleet or snowfall.
- On sharp bends.
- When the stability control systems are deactivated, e.g. DSC OFF.
- If the camera's field of view or the windshield in the area in front of the interior mirror is dirty or obstructed.
- Up to 10 seconds after engine start via the Start/Stop button.
- During the camera calibration process immediately after vehicle delivery.
- With persistent glare from backlighting, e.g. low sun.
- In darkness.
The Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function of the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 significantly increases safety in city traffic. The system detects pedestrians within the detection area and warns the driver early of an impending collision. If necessary, it supports with an automatic brake intervention and can thus prevent accidents or reduce their consequences.
This function is a real safety benefit, especially in confusing traffic situations. The combination of visual and acoustic warnings as well as brake assistance shows how consistently the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 focuses on active pedestrian protection.
FAQQuestion 1: Does the system also work in darkness?
Answer: No, due to the camera technology, object detection only works in sufficient light.
Question 2: Can the brake intervention be cancelled at any time?
Answer: Yes, pressing the accelerator pedal or an active steering movement cancels the automatic brake intervention.
