Lane change warning
The lane change warning in the BMW 5 Series G30 uses radar sensors to detect vehicles in the blind spot. As soon as a vehicle is located to the side or diagonally behind your vehicle, a warning symbol lights up in the exterior mirror. If the turn signal is nevertheless activated, the steering wheel vibrates additionally. The system is active at speeds from 20 km/h and is especially helpful when overtaking or changing lanes on multi-lane roads. The driver can adjust, activate or deactivate the system via iDrive. The lane change warning is a reliable companion in heavy traffic and significantly increases safety in everyday driving.
Principle
The lane change warning detects vehicles in the blind spot or when vehicles on the adjacent lane are approaching from behind. This is signalled by a warning.
General

Two radar sensors in the rear bumper monitor the area behind and beside the vehicle from a preset minimum speed.
The minimum speed depends on the country and is shown in the menu for the Intelligent Safety systems.
If vehicles are in the blind spot, arrow 1, or are approaching from behind on the adjacent lane, arrow 2, the system displays this.
The light in the exterior mirror lights up dimly.
Before a lane change with the turn signal activated, the system warns in the situations described above.
The light in the exterior mirror flashes and the steering wheel vibrates.
Vehicles with side collision warning: at speeds between 70 km/h and 210 km/h, the system can intervene with a brief active steering intervention and thus help return the vehicle to its lane.
Safety information
WARNING The system does not relieve you of your own responsibility to correctly assess visibility and traffic conditions.
There is a risk of accident. Adapt driving style to traffic conditions. Observe traffic and intervene actively in the appropriate situations.

Switching on/off
Switch on automatically
The lane change warning switches on automatically again after starting the vehicle if the function was switched on when the vehicle was last switched off.
Switch on/off manually
Press the button.
The menu for the Intelligent Safety systems is displayed.
If all Intelligent Safety systems were switched off, all systems are now switched on.
"Configure INDIVIDUAL": Depending on equipment, the Intelligent Safety systems can be configured individually. The individual settings are activated and stored for the currently used driver profile.
As soon as a setting is changed in the menu, all settings in the menu are activated.
Press the button repeatedly.
Switch between the following settings: "ALL ON": All Intelligent Safety systems are switched on. Basic settings are activated for the sub-functions.
"INDIVIDUAL": The Intelligent Safety systems are switched on according to the individual settings.
Some Intelligent Safety systems cannot be switched off individually.
Press and hold the button.
All Intelligent Safety systems are switched off.

Warning Function
Light in exterior mirror

Pre-warning
The dimmed light in the exterior mirror indicates when vehicles are in the blind spot or approaching from behind.
Acute warning
If the turn signal is activated while a vehicle is in the critical area, the steering wheel vibrates briefly and the light in the exterior mirror flashes brightly.
The warning ends when the turn signal is switched off or the other vehicle has left the critical area.
With side collision warning
If the steering wheel vibration is not responded to at speeds between 70 km/h and 210 km/h and a lane marking is crossed, the system intervenes with a brief active steering intervention and thus helps return the vehicle to its lane. The

System limitations
Safety information
WARNING Due to system limitations, the system may respond incorrectly or not at all. There is a risk of accident or property damage. Observe the notes on system limitations and intervene actively if necessary.
Upper speed limit
At speeds above approx. 250 km/h, the system is temporarily deactivated. As soon as the speed falls below this value again, the system responds as set.
Functional limitations: the function may be limited, for example, in the following situations:
- If the speed of the approaching vehicle is much higher than your own speed.
- In heavy fog, rain or snowfall.
- On sharp bends or narrow roads.
- If the bumper is dirty, iced over or has stickers attached.
- With protruding cargo.
On vehicles with side collision warning, the steering intervention may be limited, for example, in the following situations:
- With missing, worn, poorly visible, converging or diverging, or unclear lane markings, such as at construction sites.
- When lane markings are covered by snow, ice, dirt or water.
- When lane markings are not white.
- When lane markings are obscured by objects.
- When driving closely behind a vehicle ahead.
- With persistent glare from backlight, e.g. low sun.
- If the camera's field of view or the windshield in the area in front of the interior mirror is dirty or obstructed.
- During the camera calibration process immediately after vehicle delivery.
If the function is restricted, a Check Control message is displayed.
If the trailer socket is occupied, e.g. when towing a trailer or using a bicycle carrier, the system cannot be switched on. A Check Control message is displayed.
Displaying warnings: Depending on the warning setting selected, e.g. the warning timing, more warnings may be displayed. This can also lead to earlier warnings for critical vehicles.
The Lane Change Warning in the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 provides a high level of safety when changing lanes. It uses radar sensors to monitor the blind spot as well as the area beside and behind the vehicle. If another vehicle approaches within the critical zone, the system warns the driver visually and audibly and can assist with a brief steering intervention if necessary.
Especially when driving on multi-lane roads, this function makes lane changes safer and more relaxed. The driver remains in control and can adjust the warnings individually.
FAQQuestion 1: Does the system also intervene when towing a trailer?
Answer: No. If the trailer socket is occupied, the Lane Change Warning is deactivated and no steering intervention takes place.
Question 2: How is the driver warned in the event of a critical lane change?
Answer: By flashing indicator lights in the exterior mirror, vibration of the steering wheel and, if necessary, a steering intervention.
