Rear Collision Prevention

The Side Collision Warning in the BMW 5 Series G30 provides additional protection against impending side collisions. The system uses radar and ultrasonic sensors to detect vehicles or objects in the blind spot or during lane changes. If there is a risk of collision, steering impulses are applied to actively guide the vehicle back into its lane. Warning lights in the cockpit and vibration alerts reinforce the driver's response. The system is particularly effective in narrow construction zones or in stop-and-go traffic. It complements the existing safety functions and provides an even more confident driving experience.

Principle

The system reacts to vehicles approaching from behind.

General

Two radar sensors in the rear bumper monitor the area behind the vehicle.

If a vehicle approaches from behind at a corresponding speed, the system responds as follows:

• To warn following traffic, the hazard warning lights are switched on when a rear collision is imminent.
• Active Protection: If a collision appears unavoidable, PreCrash functions are triggered.

The system is automatically active after every trip start.

The system is deactivated in the following situations:

• When reversing.
• If the trailer socket is occupied, e.g. when towing a trailer or using a bicycle carrier

The function may be limited in the following situations:

• If the speed of the approaching vehicle is much higher than your own speed.
• If the approaching vehicle is closing in only slowly.
• In heavy fog, rain or snowfall.
• On sharp bends or narrow roads.
• If the bumper is dirty, iced over or has stickers attached.
• With protruding cargo.
