NOTE
Rotate the engine only clockwise and only use the crankshaft bolt.
Before removing the camshafts, measure the clearance of each valve on the base circle, with the cam lobe pointing away from the tappet. Failure to measure all clearances before removing the camshafts will require re-removal and installation and waste working time.
Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance of each valve and record its position.

NOTE
The number on the valve tappet reflects only the digits that follow the decimal point. For example, a tappet numbered 0.650 has a thickness of 3.650 mm.
The nominal clearance is:
- Intake: 0.25 mm (0.0098 in)
- Exhaust: 0.30 mm (0.0118 in)
NOTE
Acceptable clearances after full installation:
- Intake: 0.23-0.28 mm (0.009-0.011 in)
- Exhaust: 0.27-0.33 mm (0.010-0.013 in)
Select the tappet size closest to the ideal available tappet thickness and mark the installation location.

NOTE
Select the tappets using this formula: tappet thickness = measured clearance + existing tappet thickness - nominal clearance.
If the dimensions of any tappets do not meet the specifications, install new tappets at those locations.
