Removal

  1. Remove the VCT unit.
Refer to: Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) Unit (303-01C, Removal and Installation).
  2. Remove the bolt and the VCT oil control solenoid.
  3. Remove the special service tool: 303-465 Camshaft Timing Tool.
  4. Loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence, one turn at a time, until all tension is released from the camshaft bearing caps. Remove the bolts and the camshaft bearing caps.
  5. Remove the camshafts.

Installation

  1. Paint a mark on the crankshaft at the 12 o'clock position.
  2. Remove the special service tool: 303-507 Camshaft/Crankshaft TDC Pin.
  3. Using the crankshaft bolt and a washer, rotate the crankshaft clockwise 270 degrees until the paint mark is at the 9 o'clock position.
  4. Lubricate the camshafts with clean engine oil and install.
Refer to: Specifications (Engine 303-01C, Specifications).
    • Lubricate the camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil and install the camshaft bearing caps and bolts.
Refer to: Specifications (Engine 303-01C, Specifications).
    • Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts by hand, one turn at a time, until seated.
    • Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence in 2 stages.
      Torque:
      Stage 1: 62 lb-in (7 N·m)
      Stage 2: 142 lb-in (16 N·m)
    1. Using the camshaft flats, rotate the camshaft to place the cam lobe on the base circle so that the lobe points away from the tappet.
    1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance of each valve and record its position.
      Use general equipment: Feeler Gauge
    1. Repeat to measure all cam/tappet clearances.
    • Intake: 0.25 mm (0.0098 in).
    • Exhaust: 0.30 mm (0.0118 in).
    • Intake: 0.23-0.28 mm (0.009-0.011 in).
    • Exhaust: 0.27-0.33 mm (0.010-0.013 in).
Select the tappet size closest to the ideal available tappet thickness and mark the installation location.
  5. Loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence, one turn at a time, until all tension is released from the camshaft bearing caps. Remove the bolts and the camshaft bearing caps.
  6. Remove the camshafts.
  7. Install the special service tool: 303-507 Timing Pin, Crankshaft TDC.
  8. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 90 degrees until the crankshaft contacts the TDC pin.
Install the Special Service Tool: 303-507 Timing Pin, Crankshaft TDC.
  9. If necessary, lubricate with clean engine oil and install all tappets with the correct tappets selected during the valve clearance check.
Refer to: Specifications (Engine 303-01C, Specifications).
  10. Lubricate the camshafts and camshaft journals with clean engine oil and install the camshafts.
  11. Install the Special Service Tool: 303-465 Camshaft Timing Tool.
  12. Install the VCT oil control solenoid and bolt.
    Torque: 97 lb-in (11 N·m)
  13. Install the VCT unit.
Refer to: Variable Cam Timing (VCT) Unit (Engine 303-01C, Removal and Installation).
