Engine Coolant
The high-pressure cooling system has a reservoir filled year-round with antifreeze engine coolant. The reservoir is filled at the factory.
Check the antifreeze protection and coolant concentration at least once a year, at the beginning of the winter season and before traveling to a colder climate.
NOTICE
- If the engine has overheated due to low engine coolant level, adding engine coolant suddenly may cause the engine to crack. To prevent damage, add engine coolant slowly in small amounts.
- Do not drive without engine coolant. This may cause the water pump to fail and the engine to seize, etc.
Engine Coolant Level Inspection

■ Type A

■ Type B

■ Type C
Check the condition and connections of all cooling system hoses and heater hoses. Replace any hoses that are swollen or worn.
The coolant level should be between the MAX and MIN marks (or F (Full) and L (Low)) on the side of the coolant reservoir when the engine is running and cool.
If the coolant level is low, add enough distilled (deionized) water. Bring the level up to MAX (or F (Full)), but do not overfill.
If frequent addition is required, we recommend that the system be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI repairer.

WARNING
Never remove the coolant reservoir cap/radiator cap or drain plug while the engine and radiator are hot. Hot coolant and steam may be expelled under pressure, causing serious injury.
Turn off the engine and wait until the engine has cooled. Use extreme caution when removing the coolant reservoir cap/radiator cap. Wrap a thick towel around it and turn it counterclockwise slowly to the first stop. Step back while pressure is released from the cooling system. When you are sure all pressure has been released, press down on the cap using a thick towel and continue turning counterclockwise to remove it.
WARNING
The cooling fan motor may continue to run or start when the engine is off and may cause serious injury.
Keep hands, clothing and tools away from the rotating cooling fan blades.
The cooling fan motor is controlled by engine coolant temperature, refrigerant pressure and vehicle speed. As the engine coolant temperature decreases, the electric motor will switch off automatically. This is normal. If your vehicle is equipped with GDI, the cooling fan motor may start to run at any time and continue to run until you disconnect the negative battery cable.
Recommended Engine Coolant
- When adding coolant, use only distilled (deionized) water for your vehicle, and never add hard water to the coolant filled at the factory. An incorrect coolant mixture may cause serious malfunction or engine damage.
- Your vehicle's engine is made of aluminum. Engine parts must be protected with phosphate-based ethylene glycol coolant to prevent corrosion and freezing.
- DO NOT USE alcohol or methanol based coolant, or mix them with the specified coolant.
- Do not use a solution containing more than 60% antifreeze or less than 35% antifreeze, as this will reduce the effectiveness of the solution.
Refer to the following table for the mixture percentage.

Information
If you are unsure of the mixture ratio, use a 50% water and 50% antifreeze mixture. It is the easiest to mix together, since it is an equal amount of each. Suitable for most temperature ranges down to -35°C (-31°F) and above.
Engine Coolant Replacement
We recommend that the engine coolant be replaced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer in accordance with the Maintenance Schedule.
NOTICE
To prevent damage to engine components, place a thick cloth around the engine coolant reservoir cap or radiator cap before refilling the engine coolant to prevent coolant from contacting engine components such as the alternator.
