STARTING AND OPERATING

Cold Weather Precautions

~2min read

Operation at ambient temperatures below 32°F (0°C) may require special considerations. The following charts provide these options:

Fuel Operating Range

NOTE:

Use ONLY Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel.

Fuel Operating Range Chart

* ULSD No. 1 fuel should be used only in extended arctic conditions below 0°F (-18°C).

NOTE:

  • Using climatized ULSD or ULSD No. 1 fuel results in a noticeable reduction in fuel economy.
  • Climatized ULSD fuel is a blend of ULSD No. 2 fuel and ULSD No. 1 fuel, which lowers the temperature at which paraffin crystals form in the fuel.
  • The fuel grade must be clearly marked on the pump at the fuel station.
  • The engine requires the use of Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel fuel. Using unsuitable fuel may damage the engine and exhaust system.
  • If climatized or ULSD No. 1 fuel is not available and you are operating below 20°F (-6°C) in sustained arctic conditions, Mopar® Diesel Fuel Premium Treatment (or equivalent) is recommended to prevent gelling (see the Fuel Operating Range chart).

Engine Oil Use

See Engine Fluids and Lubricants for the correct engine oil viscosity.

Winter Cover

A winter front cover or cold weather cover may be used when the ambient temperature is below 32°F (0°C), especially during extended idling conditions. This cover is equipped with four shutters to control the opening of the grille in different ambient temperatures. If a winter front or cold weather cover is used, the shutters must be in the fully open position to allow air access to the cooling module and transmission oil cooler. When the ambient temperature drops below 0°F (-17°C), close the four shutters. A suitable cold weather cover can be purchased from a Mopar® dealer.

Engine Warm-Up

Avoid operating at full throttle when the engine is cold. When starting a cold engine, increase engine speed slowly to operating speed to allow oil pressure to stabilize as the engine warms up.

If the temperature is below 32°F (0°C), run the engine at moderate speed for five minutes before applying full load.
