Starting the engine with a discharged key battery
CAUTION
When starting the engine by holding the key transmitter over the START/STOP button because the key battery is discharged or the key is malfunctioning, be careful to avoid the following conditions. Otherwise, the signal from the key may not be received correctly and the engine may not start.
- Metal parts of other keys or metal objects touch the key holder.

- Spare keys or keys of other vehicles equipped with an immobilizer system touch or are near the key.

- Other electronic devices touch or are near the key.
If the engine cannot be started because the battery is discharged, the engine can be started as follows:
1. Firmly press the brake pedal.
2. (Manual transmission) Keep the clutch pedal pressed until the engine has fully started.
3. Make sure the indicator light (green) in the START/STOP button is flashing.
CAUTION
The START/STOP button indicator light (green) will flash even if the START/STOP button is pressed before the brake pedal (automatic transmission) or clutch pedal (manual transmission) is pressed. If the clutch pedal is pressed in a vehicle with manual transmission, or the brake pedal is pressed in a vehicle with automatic transmission, the engine can be started by performing the steps described below.
4. Touch the START/STOP button with the back side of the key (as shown) while the START/STOP button indicator light (green) is flashing.

CAUTION
When touching the START/STOP button with the back side of the key as shown in the illustration, touch it with the side of the transmitter that has the lock button.
5. Make sure the indicator light (green) in the START/STOP button comes on.
6. Press the START/STOP button to start the engine.
CAUTION
The engine cannot be started until the clutch pedal (manual transmission) or brake pedal (automatic transmission) is fully pressed.
If the START/STOP button is malfunctioning, its indicator light (orange) flashes. In this case the engine can still be started, but have the vehicle checked at a qualified workshop. We recommend an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
If the START/STOP button indicator light (green) does not come on, repeat the steps above from the beginning. If the indicator light still does not come on, have the vehicle checked at a qualified workshop. We recommend an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
To change the ignition switch position without starting the engine, perform the steps below after the START/STOP button indicator light (green) comes on.
1. Release the clutch pedal (manual transmission) or brake pedal (automatic transmission).
2. Press the START/STOP button to change the ignition switch position.
Each press of the START/STOP button changes the ignition switch position in the order ACC, ON and OFF.
