Terminology

~2min read

Before loading your vehicle, it is important to become familiar with the following terminology:

  • Curb weight (actual vehicle weight) - The weight of the vehicle including standard and optional equipment, fluids, tools, and the spare tire. This weight does not include passengers and cargo.
  • GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) - Curb weight of the vehicle plus the combined weight of passengers and cargo.
  • GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) - Maximum total weight of the unloaded vehicle, passengers, cargo, hitch, tongue load on the trailer hitch, and any optional equipment.

This information is shown on the FMVSS/NSVAC certification label.

  • GAWR (gross axle weight rating) - Maximum (loaded vehicle) weight specified for the front or rear axle. This information is shown on the FMVSS/NSVAC certification label.
  • GCWR (gross combined weight rating) - Maximum total rated weight of the vehicle, passengers, cargo, and trailer.
  • Vehicle capacity, load limit, total load capacity - Maximum total weight specified for the load (passengers and cargo) of the vehicle.
  • This is the maximum total weight of occupants and cargo that the vehicle can carry. If the vehicle is used to tow a trailer, the tongue load on the trailer hitch must be included in the calculation of the cargo weight. This information is found on the tire and loading information label.

  • Cargo capacity - Allowable cargo weight obtained by subtracting the weight of the occupants from the load limit.
