Charging System
Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. If the battery charge warning lamp on the instrument panel does not illuminate with the ignition on, first check the lamp circuit.
2. If no faults are found, the alternator is faulty and must be repaired or replaced.
3. If the charge warning lamp comes on with the engine running, check the drive belt tension and the generator mounting.
4. If no faults are found, have the generator repaired.
5. If signs of a charging circuit fault appear with the charge warning lamp on, check the voltage regulator as follows.
6. Connect a voltmeter to the battery.
7. Increase engine speed until the generator voltage is 13–14 V.
8. Switch on all electrical loads (headlights, rear window defroster, etc.) and check that the voltage remains 13–14 V.
9. If the voltage differs, the generator is faulty and must be repaired.
