Pump - Timing

WARNING: the engine must only be turned by acting on the wheel, with 5th gear engaged, and only in its normal direction of rotation; if it is turned in the reverse direction, repeat the timing check or zero-timing adjustment procedure.
CHECKING THE TIMING OF INJECTION PUMPS FITTED WITH A RAM PULLEY
Turn the engine two revolutions in its direction of rotation (by turning the wheel with 5th gear engaged).
Remove the timing access plug located on the pump cover.
Fit tool Mot. 1079 and zero the dial gauge on the pump cam's base-circle (dwell) zone (turn the engine in its direction of rotation to assist).
NOTE: to obtain an accurate setting and avoid reaching the end of the dial gauge travel, it is recommended to preload the gauge by 1 mm.

Contents of Mot. 1079
- Timing pin
- Dial gauge holder
- 30 mm travel dial gauge

Lock the engine with tool Mot. 1054 as follows:
- Turn the engine in its direction of rotation (clockwise when viewed from the timing belt side).
- Watch the mark on the camshaft pulley until it appears.
- Stop turning the engine half a turn before the two marks align.

- Fit timing pin Mot. 1054.

- Apply light pressure to the pin.
- Turn the engine slowly until the pin engages in the crankshaft notch.
- Check the pump plunger lift reading on the dial gauge.
- The specified value is marked on a plate located on the load lever.
- If the value is not correct, correct the timing (see below).
MODIFICATION OF TOOL Mot. 1358
When adjusting HTD2 pulleys, this modification is mandatory.
File the three tabs of the tool by 1.5 mm.

ADJUSTING THE TIMING OF INJECTION PUMPS FITTED WITH A RAM PULLEY
Remove the cover protecting the RAM pulley.
Fit pulley holding tool Mot. 1317 or Mot. 1200.

WARNING: slightly loosen bolt (1) with tool Mot. 1359 (note: left-hand thread) so that flange (B) can rotate freely.

Engage tool Mot. 1358 in the three openings of flange (B).
Turn the tool-and-flange assembly so that the three tabs of the tool engage in the three recesses of the annular adjusting screw.

Turn the flange-and-tool assembly clockwise until tool Mot. 1358 locks, which places the pulley at the start of the adjustment range.
Remove holding tool Mot. 1317 or Mot. 1200.

- Fit timing pin Mot. 1054.

- Apply light pressure to the pin.
- Turn the engine slowly until the pin engages in the crankshaft notch.
- Using tool Mot. 1358, set the timing by turning the tool counterclockwise until the timing value is reached.
- The specified value is marked on a plate located on the load lever.
NOTE: if the timing value is exceeded during adjustment, back off one full turn with tool Mot. 1358 to take up the play, then repeat the adjustment from the previous step.
Leave timing pin Mot. 1054 in place.
Lightly pre-tighten bolt (1) using Mot.
1359, without exceeding 2 daN.m (left-hand thread).
WARNING: the torque wrench used must release in the left-hand direction.
Remove locking pin Tool 1054.
Fit pulley holding tool Mot. 1377 or 1200.
Turn the engine by hand counterclockwise to bring the holding tool into contact with the pulley.
Tighten bolt (1) to 9 daN.m using tool Mot. 1359.
Turn the engine two revolutions and check the pump timing again.
