Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor is a speed-density type sensor and is installed on the surge tank. It senses the absolute pressure in the surge tank and sends an analog signal proportional to the pressure to the ECM. Using this signal, the ECM calculates the intake air volume and engine speed. The MAP sensor consists of a piezoelectric element and a hybrid IC that amplifies the element output signal. The element is a silicon diaphragm type and uses the pressure-sensitive effect of a semiconductor variable resistor. Since a 100% vacuum and the intake manifold pressure are applied to each side of the sensor, the sensor can output an analog signal proportional to the pressure change using the silicon change.
